The international cruise liner MS Sirena, operated by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings under the Marshall Islands flag, docked at the New Mangalore Port on Saturday, marking the third cruise visit of the ongoing season. The vessel arrived from Kochi as part of its international itinerary covering Colombo, Kochi, Mangaluru, Goa, and Mumbai, carrying 619 passengers and 390 crew members.
Port authorities coordinated with local tourism stakeholders to host a traditional welcome at the cruise terminal. Passengers were offered guided tours to prominent cultural and religious sites, including the Gokarnanatheshwara Temple, St Aloysius Chapel, and the Thousand Pillar Jain Temple, along with visits to local markets. The itinerary also featured cultural programmes and meditation sessions, highlighting Mangaluru’s rich spiritual and artistic heritage.Officials emphasised that the increasing arrival of international cruise vessels is positioning Mangaluru as an emerging cruise tourism hub along India’s west coast. “Each visit provides a direct boost to local businesses, hospitality services, and cultural sectors while promoting the city as a distinctive maritime destination,” noted a senior port official.
The cruise season is expected to continue bringing international visitors, offering opportunities for coastal economic growth and infrastructure development. Experts highlight that strategic investments in cruise terminal facilities, port logistics, and urban mobility are crucial to sustaining and scaling cruise tourism while ensuring visitor experience and safety standards. The MS Sirena is scheduled to depart for Mormugao later in the evening, continuing its multi-city voyage along the western seaboard. Analysts note that the growth in cruise arrivals also aligns with broader efforts to diversify regional tourism portfolios, encouraging private sector engagement in hospitality, local cultural programming, and marine leisure activities. For Mangaluru, this trend not only strengthens its tourism profile but also underscores the economic potential of integrating maritime infrastructure with city planning, urban development, and coastal management strategies. By leveraging cruise tourism, the city aims to foster sustainable visitor-driven revenue streams while preserving cultural and environmental assets.
