Mangaluru Thiruvananthapuram Vande Bharat Express to double capacity with 16-coach upgrade

Southern Railway has announced the augmentation of the Mangaluru Central–Thiruvananthapuram Central Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 20631/20632) to a 16-coach configuration.

This enhancement, set to commence on May 22, 2025, will effectively double the train’s passenger capacity, addressing the increasing patronage along this vital route. The current eight-coach configuration comprises one executive class and seven chair car coaches, accommodating approximately 530 passengers. The upgraded 16-coach train will include two executive class and 14 chair car coaches, raising the total seating capacity to 1,128. Each chair car coach will seat 78 passengers, except for the first and last, which will seat 44, while each executive class coach will seat 52 passengers.

This decision follows a pattern observed in other parts of Kerala, where the Thiruvananthapuram–Kasaragod–Thiruvananthapuram Vande Bharat Express was upgraded to a 20-coach configuration earlier this year to accommodate the rising number of passengers. The success of this initiative has prompted Southern Railway to implement a similar strategy for the Mangaluru–Thiruvananthapuram route. The Mangaluru–Thiruvananthapuram Vande Bharat Express, inaugurated on March 12, 2024, operates six days a week, excluding Wednesdays. The train covers a distance of approximately 620 km, traversing through nine stations, including Alappuzha, and offers amenities such as onboard catering, Wi-Fi, infotainment systems, and comfortable seating arrangements.

The augmentation to a 16-coach configuration is expected to alleviate congestion and provide a more comfortable travel experience for passengers. The move aligns with Indian Railways’ broader strategy to enhance the capacity and efficiency of its premium services, ensuring they meet the growing demand for high-speed, comfortable, and sustainable transportation options. As the Indian Railways continues to modernize its fleet and infrastructure, initiatives like the Mangaluru–Thiruvananthapuram Vande Bharat Express serve as a testament to the commitment towards providing efficient and eco-friendly travel solutions. The 16-coach upgrade not only addresses immediate capacity concerns but also sets a precedent for future enhancements in the country’s rail network.

Passengers are advised to check the official Southern Railway website or the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) portal for updated schedules and seat availability closer to the commencement date.
