Mangaluru Launches One Of 42 Automated Test Tracks Planned Across Karnataka This Year

By the end of 2025, Karnataka is set to become the first Indian state with the highest number of automated driving test tracks, marking a critical step towards enhancing road safety, transport transparency, and e-mobility infrastructure. Officials confirmed that 42 such test tracks will be developed across all districts, with several already operational and more in the pipeline.

The latest facility, inaugurated in Pajeer village near Ullal, is part of the state’s broader vision to digitise and automate the process of issuing driving licences. Built at a cost of ₹7 crore, the new track brings much-needed testing infrastructure to the coastal region and addresses long-standing public demand for fair, technology-driven licensing systems. The transport department has outlined a district-wise plan to ensure equitable access. Completed tracks in regions like Dharwad, Koppal, Sirsi, and Chintamani are now fully functional. Simultaneously, ongoing work is reported in Kalaburagi, Yadgir, KGF, and Belagavi, while proposals for new sites in Honnavar, Madhugiri, and Gokak are progressing steadily.

Officials noted that the automated tracks not only eliminate human bias in driving licence assessments but also help reduce traffic-related corruption and road mishaps. These tracks use high-definition cameras, sensor-enabled tracks, and AI-integrated systems to evaluate drivers on multiple safety parameters such as lane discipline, speed control, and emergency handling. In line with the state’s commitment to green transport solutions, the transport department is also introducing 500 electric buses across Karnataka. Of these, 100 are earmarked for Mangaluru. While private agencies will manage bus maintenance and drivers through tenders, the state government will directly appoint conductors to retain regulatory oversight. Talks are also underway with central ministries to seek GST relaxations on electric buses to make clean transport more viable.

Infrastructure expansion in the Ullal region is receiving renewed focus as public amenities like driving tracks are coupled with developmental projects such as Beary Bhavana and Abbakka Bhavana. Local elected officials believe such moves will encourage trade, attract investment, and boost employment in semi-urban pockets. Additionally, civic groups have called for improved interstate KSRTC connectivity between Mangaluru and nearby cities like Kasargod. Transport department insiders indicated that such services are under active consideration, subject to infrastructure readiness and operational feasibility.

As Karnataka races to build these automated test tracks, it also reflects a wider ambition to modernise urban mobility, reduce carbon emissions, and enforce regulatory equity. The success of this model could set a precedent for other Indian states aiming to create smarter, more sustainable transport ecosystems.
