Mangaluru International Airport (MIA), despite operating for over seven decades, has yet to secure Point of Call (PoC) status, which is crucial for enabling foreign airlines to operate services directly from the airport. However, the recent launch of direct flights to Singapore has sparked new hope for the airport, increasing demand for this long-awaited status.
Traditionally serving flights to the Gulf countries, MIA has seen a significant boost with the addition of international destinations like Singapore, reflecting the airport’s growing potential to handle a broader range of international flights. The PoC status would allow foreign airlines to operate services directly from MIA, enhancing its connectivity and attracting more international airlines to the region.
Brijesh Chowta, the Member of Parliament for Dakshina Kannada, has shown strong support for granting PoC status to MIA. “We have many people from our coastal region working in the Gulf and other countries, but the airport has not yet received PoC status. If granted, we could see many more international flights coming to Mangaluru,” Chowta said. He has committed to meeting with the Ministry of Civil Aviation to discuss the matter and push for the status, which would significantly improve air travel options for local residents.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has explained that the allocation of PoC status depends on several factors, including bilateral air service agreements, the size of Indian communities abroad, and mutual benefits for both India and foreign nations. These agreements govern how foreign carriers can operate in India, with PoC status being a critical component. Since MIA became an international airport in 2012, the PoC status has remained elusive, despite growing demand from aviation enthusiasts and local businesses. Experts believe that granting PoC status would enhance MIA’s role as a key aviation hub on the west coast, boosting both the regional economy and tourism. In addition to the direct Singapore flight, Air India Express has announced new flights connecting Mangaluru to Pune and Delhi. Starting in January 2025, the Pune-Mangaluru route will resume, and a new flight to Delhi will begin in February 2025. These new connections are expected to facilitate business and tourism travel, further strengthening MIA’s position in India’s aviation landscape. With these developments, MIA is on track to increase its international connectivity. The push for PoC status reflects the region’s growing importance in India’s aviation sector, and granting it could pave the way for more international airlines to serve this bustling city.
