Malabar Hill Residents Object Tank Rebuilding Plan

The residents of Malabar Hill in Mumbai have voiced concern over the potential loss of green cover as part of the planned reconstruction of Malabar Hill reservoir. A public hearing was conducted to discuss the proposed removal of 189 trees to make way for a tank construction project located behind the iconic Hanging Garden. The participants raised concern about preserving the existing rain trees situated on plots where tree removal notices have been issued.

Out of the 389 trees marked on the plot for various actions, 189 are slated for removal, while the remaining 200 will be transplanted. The plot houses a diverse range of trees, including jackfruit, mango, ashoka, neem, shevga and more. The residents suggested relocating the reservoir to Mahalaxmi Racecourse or Banganga which was deemed technically unfeasible.

The civic waterworks department explained that the construction of 90 mld alternate tank on the adjoining plot is planned, and water supply will be diverted to this tank in phases. The existing 22,000 sq meter reservoir cannot be disturbed due to the risk of collapse, necessitating the construction of alternate tanks.

The Malabar Hill area has a water requirement of 240 mld, while the current reservoir has a capacity of 147 mld. The BMC’s waterworks department aims to augment the water supply from 149 mld to 191 mld to cater to the needs of South Mumbai, including Nariman Point, Cuffe Parade and Malabar Hill.
