Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, major Gulf carriers have suspended or rerouted flights to the region, citing security concerns and airspace restrictions.
Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Qatar Airways have confirmed temporary halts or diversions of services to both countries, significantly impacting air connectivity across South Asia. Emirates announced the suspension of flights to Pakistan until 10 May, affecting routes to cities such as Lahore, Islamabad, Sialkot, and Peshawar. Etihad Airways canceled services to Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad on 6 and 7 May, while Qatar Airways temporarily halted operations to Pakistan due to airspace limitations.
These disruptions follow India’s recent airstrikes targeting alleged terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Punjab province, actions that have intensified the conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. In retaliation, Pakistan has launched drone and missile strikes into Indian territory, further exacerbating the situation The closure of 27 airports in northern and western India, including key hubs like Srinagar, Jammu, and Amritsar, has led to the cancellation of over 430 flights, severely disrupting domestic and international travel. The Airports Authority of India has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) confirming these closures will remain in effect until at least 10 May.
The aviation industry faces significant financial repercussions due to these disruptions. Indian airlines are projected to incur additional monthly operational costs exceeding ₹306 crore, driven by longer flight durations, increased fuel consumption, and logistical challenges. These factors also strain aircraft availability and crew scheduling, compounding the operational difficulties. Passengers are advised to stay informed about flight schedules and adhere to airline advisories, including arriving at airports well in advance and complying with enhanced security protocols. As the situation remains fluid, further adjustments to flight operations are anticipated, underscoring the need for travelers to remain vigilant and flexible in their plans.
