Maharashtra’s UDAN Boost: ₹561 Crore Allocated for Nine Airports Revival

In a strategic move to enhance regional air connectivity, nine airports in Maharashtra earmarked for revival under the UDAN scheme have seen a significant allocation of ₹561.20 crore from 2017-18 to December 2023. The ambitious UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, launched by the Ministry of Civil Aviation in October 2016, aims to stimulate regional air connectivity and make air travel more accessible to the masses.

The identified airports set to benefit from the allocated budget include Kolhapur, Jalgaon, Solapur, Amravati, Nanded, Nasik, Ratnagiri, Gondia, and Sindhudurg. As of now, these airports have efficiently utilised ₹428.84 crore, representing a commendable 76 percent of the sanctioned budget. The UDAN scheme primarily focuses on providing connectivity to previously underserved and unserved airports across the country by reviving existing airstrips and airports. The move has been welcomed by industrial bodies in the state, advocating for strengthened airline networks to boost industries through improved connectivity. Elected representatives from the identified districts have echoed these sentiments, urging the central government to intervene and engage with airlines to facilitate their services in these cities.

While the UDAN scheme has undeniably made significant strides in enhancing regional air connectivity in Maharashtra, challenges remain. Ensuring an equitable distribution of funds among all identified airports is imperative, alongside diligent budget utilisation. Industry experts emphasise the need for a strategic approach to guarantee optimal allocation and utilisation of the budget, maximising the impact on regional air connectivity. As Maharashtra continues to position itself as a hub for economic growth, the concerted efforts under the UDAN scheme are poised to further transform the regional aviation landscape, fostering increased accessibility and economic development.
