Maharashtra’s GBS Cases Hit 211 Health Officials Address Concerns Amid Outbreak

Maharashtra is grappling with a worrying surge in Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases, with the total number of confirmed and suspected cases reaching 211. A recent update revealed that one more person had been diagnosed, adding to the tally of this rare and often severe neurological disorder. Among the 211 cases, 183 are confirmed instances, with the remainder still under investigation.

GBS is a rare condition in which the immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness, and in more severe cases, the loss of sensation in the arms or legs. Some patients also experience difficulties with swallowing or even breathing, which can lead to life-threatening complications. While the disorder is uncommon, its rapid onset can be alarming for those affected. The outbreak has been concentrated in the Pune region, which has reported the most cases in the state. The majority of cases—42—are from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), with another 94 cases from newly-added villages within the PMC area. The neighbouring Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has recorded 32 cases, with the remaining 33 cases spread across Pune’s rural areas and other districts.

As of the latest reports, 139 patients have been discharged after receiving treatment. However, 39 remain in critical condition and are currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while 18 others are on ventilators. The situation remains concerning, with the state reporting a total of nine deaths linked to GBS. Four of these deaths were confirmed as caused by GBS, while the other five are suspected to have been complications of the disorder. The outbreak has prompted health authorities to issue advisories and recommendations to curb the spread of the condition. Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar, took to the media to address the growing concerns, especially following reports that suggested a potential link between poultry consumption and the GBS outbreak.

In a bid to contain the situation, Ajit Pawar urged people to avoid consuming undercooked chicken, as the outbreak had sparked speculation about its possible connection to poultry consumption. Speaking in Pune, Pawar assured the public that there was no need to cull chickens, despite some initial fears about water contamination or consumption of undercooked poultry. “There is no need to cull poultry,” Pawar confirmed. “However, we advise people to ensure that their food, particularly chicken, is thoroughly cooked to avoid health complications.” Doctors have also recommended that all food, especially poultry, should be cooked well to reduce the risk of any potential health hazards. While many were initially concerned that GBS could be linked to water contamination in certain areas, especially around the Khadakwasla dam in Pune, a detailed review of the situation has cleared any major links between the outbreak and the water supply. This has allowed health authorities to reassure residents and reduce panic.

Although the GBS outbreak is currently under control, with authorities taking necessary steps to monitor the situation, experts are urging the public to remain cautious. With new cases continuing to be reported, it is essential for residents to stay informed and follow recommended precautions, particularly regarding food safety. As Maharashtra continues to battle the GBS outbreak, the state’s health department is working closely with medical professionals to treat those affected and to investigate the causes behind the surge in cases. The advice to avoid undercooked poultry remains a key preventive measure, with health experts recommending thorough cooking to prevent any further complications. The GBS outbreak serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance when it comes to public health, and authorities are urging all residents to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their communities.
