Maharashtra to Offer INR 10,000 to Senior Auto and Taxi Drivers
The Maharashtra government has unveiled a one-time grant of INR 10,000 for auto and taxi drivers aged 65 and above, aiming to support senior drivers in the state. State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik introduced the scheme on Thursday, February 13, as part of a broader initiative to assist drivers working in the unorganised sector who often lack social security benefits.
The scheme, targeted at drivers who have been registered with the state’s welfare board for at least five years, reflects the government’s commitment to improving the well-being of the state’s estimated 9 to 10 million auto and taxi drivers. These drivers form a vital part of the transportation infrastructure, yet many operate without the protection of formal employment benefits. To fund this initiative and other welfare programs, the state government has earmarked INR 50 crore. The welfare board, which supports these drivers, is also working on additional benefits such as scholarships for the children of drivers, health schemes including life and disability insurance, and an annual awards program to recognise outstanding drivers, driver associations, and well-maintained rickshaw stands.
To be eligible for the welfare benefits, drivers must pay a one-time registration fee of INR 500 and an annual contribution of INR 300. In a bid to streamline the registration process, the welfare board has launched an online portal, making it easier for drivers to access the board’s financial and social benefits. The announcement was made during the first meeting of the Dharamveer Anand Dighe Maharashtra Auto Rickshaw and Meter Taxi Drivers Welfare Board, formed on January 27 in memory of the late Anand Dighe. The board aims to offer both financial assistance and social security to Maharashtra’s auto and taxi drivers. The inaugural meeting was attended by key officials, including Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimrao, who echoed Minister Sarnaik’s remarks on the government’s dedication to supporting the state’s transport workers.
