Maharashtra to Launch Innovation City, Boosting Startups and Technology Sector
Maharashtra is set to make a major leap in fostering innovation and startup growth with the announcement of an Innovation City, which will be modelled on Gujarat’s successful GIFT (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City) City. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis revealed the ambitious plans for this development at a recent startup and technology forum in Mumbai, marking National Startup Day with an exciting roadmap for the state’s future.
Fadnavis explained that the new Innovation City would be designed to encourage technological advancements, foster startup culture, and create a conducive environment for innovation. The government has promised that the new infrastructure will mirror the successes of GIFT City, focusing on creating an ecosystem where startups and tech companies can thrive.
One of the key announcements was the introduction of a new startup policy, which is expected to be unveiled in the next two months. The policy will be open for public consultation, allowing entrepreneurs, investors, and stakeholders to offer feedback and shape its direction. Fadnavis assured that the policy would be the most progressive in India, aimed at simplifying processes and providing startups with more opportunities for growth. The state government is keen to create an environment where innovation can flourish. By offering incentives such as reduced compliance burdens, tax exemptions, and quicker patent application processes, Maharashtra hopes to become a more attractive destination for both national and international startups.
In addition to the infrastructure and policy changes, Fadnavis also highlighted a significant financial initiative aimed at providing much-needed funding to startups across Maharashtra. The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) has committed to creating a ₹100 crore fund specifically for startups in the state. A portion of this fund, ₹30 crore, will be made available in each of Maharashtra’s divisional centres, with additional funds allocated to Mumbai, which remains the state’s primary hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. This initiative is expected to strengthen the financial ecosystem for startups, providing them with the resources they need to scale and develop groundbreaking technologies. Fadnavis pointed out that with over 25,000 startups currently operating in Maharashtra, this new funding would further elevate the state’s standing as the country’s leading startup destination.
Maharashtra is already home to some of the nation’s most promising tech startups, particularly in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. As the state continues to dominate the startup scene, Fadnavis proudly shared that Maharashtra has surpassed Bengaluru in terms of investment and value, with Mumbai securing $3 billion in tech funding in 2024. This marks a significant achievement for the state, positioning it as a strong contender in the tech and innovation space. Mumbai’s success in raising $25.6 billion in tech funding further underscores the state’s critical role in India’s technological advancement. By fostering an ecosystem of innovation and offering robust financial support, Maharashtra continues to create the ideal conditions for startups to succeed.
Maharashtra is not only focusing on tech startups but is also increasing its efforts to develop the defence sector. A dedicated fund of funds (FoF) has been set up to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and startups involved in defence technology. This move will not only enhance the state’s infrastructure in defence but will also create synergies between the technology and industrial sectors. In addition to these efforts, Maharashtra is transforming its Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) into AI-focused centres. These centres, in partnership with universities, will serve as breeding grounds for the next generation of tech entrepreneurs and professionals, ensuring that the state is well-prepared to meet the demands of an ever-evolving technology landscape.
