Maharashtra To Launch AI Based Digital Autopsy Facilities At KEM JJ Hospitals

Mumbai is set to witness a technological shift in forensic medicine as the Maharashtra government announces the introduction of AI-based digital autopsy facilities at KEM and JJ Hospitals. The initiative marks a move towards non-invasive postmortem examinations, allowing authorities to determine causes of death without traditional incisions, while also modernising investigative procedures.

Digital autopsy technology leverages high-resolution imaging systems, CT scans, and MRI equipment to inspect internal organs. According to an official, “The non-invasive approach not only preserves the integrity of the body but also facilitates precise and scientific analysis, enhancing forensic reliability.” This development is expected to improve accuracy in cases of accidents, unnatural deaths, and criminal investigations, while digitally archived reports will support long-term judicial documentation. The proposal for the new system was submitted by KEM Hospital’s Forensic Medicine Department. Hospital officials confirmed that following approval from the Additional Municipal Commissioner (Health), the state government will oversee procurement and implementation. Meanwhile, JJ Hospital has already commenced infrastructure upgrades in its forensic wing to accommodate the technology.

Industry experts highlight that AI-enabled postmortems significantly reduce turnaround time for examinations. “Processing times for postmortems will be shorter, allowing quicker closure for legal and family proceedings,” noted a senior medical examiner. Additionally, the technology addresses the sensitivities of bereaved families by avoiding invasive procedures, fostering a more humane approach to forensic analysis. Beyond investigations, the digital autopsy facilities are expected to serve as training hubs for medical students and practising doctors, providing opportunities for research in forensic sciences. Educational officials have emphasised that exposure to advanced imaging methods will equip future professionals with the skills required for modern forensic practice.

If successful, the pilot programme at KEM and JJ Hospitals is likely to be expanded to other public hospitals across Maharashtra. Authorities believe that this phased rollout can contribute to a more efficient, accurate, and compassionate forensic system, while integrating advanced technology into public healthcare. By introducing AI-based digital autopsies, Maharashtra aims to enhance forensic transparency and operational efficiency in government hospitals, aligning with broader objectives of scientific modernisation and urban healthcare excellence.
