Maharashtra To Launch 12th Vande Bharat Linking Ajni And Pune On August 10

Maharashtra is set to strengthen its high-speed rail network with the launch of its 12th Vande Bharat Express, linking Ajni in Nagpur with Pune. Scheduled to be flagged off on 10 August from Bengaluru alongside two other new routes, this service marks a milestone in the state’s railway connectivity, being both the fastest train between Nagpur and Pune and the longest Vande Bharat route in Maharashtra, covering 881 kilometres.

Officials from Central Railway confirmed that the Ajni–Pune Vande Bharat will operate at an average speed of 73 kmph, completing the journey with just 10 intermediate stops. The route will pass through key industrial, educational, and cultural hubs, including Wardha, Akola, Shegaon, Bhusaval, Jalgaon, Manmad, Kopargaon, and Ahmednagar. With 8 coaches accommodating 590 passengers, the train will operate six days a week, ensuring high-frequency service for both business and leisure travellers. The introduction of this service is expected to significantly reduce travel time and improve passenger comfort, offering a competitive alternative to road and air travel. Experts believe this could positively impact regional trade, academic exchanges, and tourism between Vidarbha and western Maharashtra.

Nagpur, often referred to as the “Orange City” and “Tiger Capital of India”, is also a major medical and educational centre with institutions like AIIMS and several universities. It has strong cultural significance as the site of Deekshabhoomi, a major Buddhist pilgrimage destination, as well as historical landmarks like Ramtek. Pune, known as the cultural capital of Maharashtra, boasts a rich Maratha heritage, iconic structures like Shaniwarwada, and revered religious sites such as Alandi and Jejuri. Both cities are magnets for industry, education, and tourism, making the high-speed rail link a strategic boost to their economic ecosystem. According to railway experts, the project demonstrates the national focus on expanding semi-high-speed train services, with over 70 Vande Bharat trains already operational across 24 states and union territories. Indian Railways has outlined plans to introduce more than 200 such trains in the next three years, underlining the country’s commitment to modern, energy-efficient, and eco-friendly transport infrastructure.

The Ajni–Pune Vande Bharat’s launch aligns with broader goals of sustainable urban and intercity mobility. Its faster journey times and electric traction not only reduce carbon emissions compared to road transport but also make rail an increasingly attractive option for conscious travellers. Regular service will commence on 11 August from Pune and 12 August from Ajni. The move is being seen as a decisive step towards bridging regional distances, improving productivity, and reshaping the passenger experience in Indian rail travel.
