Maharashtra Railway Projects Get Rs 89780 Crore Infrastructure Boost

Maharashtra’s railway infrastructure is undergoing an unprecedented transformation with the Ministry of Railways sanctioning 38 large-scale projects worth ₹89,780 crore across the state. These ongoing developments span over 5,000 km, and a total of 2,360 km has already been commissioned as of March 2025. This massive expansion is designed to ease network congestion, improve connectivity, and create long-term socio-economic gains across urban and semi-urban corridors.

According to railway officials, the sanctioned projects include 11 new lines, two gauge conversions, and 25 doubling or multitracking works. Many of these are high-value and strategic projects, reflecting a focused push by the central government to bolster capacity and reliability within the state’s rail infrastructure. Data provided by the Ministry confirms that ₹39,407 crore has already been spent on the sanctioned works. The execution pace has more than tripled since 2014. Compared to an average of 58 km of track commissioned annually between 2009 and 2014, Maharashtra has seen more than 208 km per year being completed post-2014, marking a structural shift in delivery timelines.

Several projects have already been completed in recent months. These include gauge conversions such as the 300 km Jabalpur–Gondia and 150 km Chhindwara–Nagpur lines, along with doubling works like Panvel–Roha and Udhna–Jalgaon. One of the state’s costliest doubling works, the ₹3,182 crore Daund–Gulbarga line, has also reached completion. Among the most significant ongoing works are the ₹16,321 crore Manmad–Indore new line and the 466 km Pune–Miraj–Londa doubling. The ₹30,376 crore Daund–Manmad doubling is another critical project that aims to unlock high-capacity freight corridors and reduce pressure on passenger operations.

In a strong indication of the government’s strategic commitment to Maharashtra’s freight and logistics growth, the state’s entire 5,938-km broad gauge network has now been electrified. This transition not only aligns with India’s zero-carbon transport goals but also reduces operating costs and enhances energy efficiency. Additionally, construction work has accelerated on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor, with land acquisition now complete in the Maharashtra stretch. Civil engineering works, including viaducts and bridges, are actively underway.

On the freight front, 12% of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) lies in Maharashtra, with 76 km already commissioned between New Gholvad and New Vaitarna. The remaining alignment, which connects to JNPT, is expected to boost freight movement and reduce road congestion. The Ministry has also greenlit 94 survey works across the state, including 26 for new lines, under the PM Gati Shakti Master Plan. These initiatives are expected to bring nearly 8,000 km of new infrastructure into planning and funding pipelines.

Experts highlight that the current momentum, if sustained, could permanently alter Maharashtra’s logistical landscape, making it a model for integrated, sustainable and job-generating rail infrastructure development.
