Maharashtra Initiates Ambitious Air Quality Monitoring Project

In a significant move to combat air pollution, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has initiated a project to install 50 Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (CAAQMS) across 36 different locations in the state.

The project aims to enhance air quality monitoring capabilities in key urban centers and industrial regions, including Thane, Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar, Ulhasnagar, Nanded, Beed, Gondia, and others. Among the municipalities benefiting from this initiative, Thane, Vasai-Virar, and Kalyan-Dombivali are set to receive three monitoring stations each. This strategic distribution of monitoring infrastructure underscores the commitment to ensuring comprehensive coverage and effective oversight of air quality parameters in densely populated areas. The CAAQMS will serve as critical tools for assessing air pollution levels, monitoring key pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ammonia, and ozone. Additionally, the stations will gather data on environmental factors including wind direction, wind speed, ambient temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation, and rainfall.

The MPCB has invited bids from qualified contractors for the installation and operation of these monitoring stations. The bidding process, initiated on March 13, will conclude on April 2. While the timeline for station deployment remains unspecified, the selected bidder will be entrusted with the operation and maintenance of the stations for an initial period of five years, with the potential for a three-year extension. Key responsibilities of the selected contractor include maintaining a robust data display system showcasing the air quality index and promptly sharing data with the MPCB and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on a daily basis. This transparent data-sharing mechanism is crucial for facilitating informed decision-making and policy formulation to address air quality challenges effectively. The establishment of an extensive network of CAAQMS underscores Maharashtra’s commitment to environmental stewardship and public health. By leveraging advanced monitoring technology and fostering collaboration between regulatory bodies and stakeholders, the state aims to mitigate the adverse impacts of air pollution and safeguard the well-being of its citizens.
