The Maharashtra government has granted final approval to the master plan for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP), aiming to transform Asia’s largest informal settlement into a modern, sustainable urban hub by 2032.
This ambitious initiative, with an estimated investment of ₹95,790 crore, is poised to reshape Mumbai’s urban landscape, focusing on inclusivity, sustainability, and economic empowerment. The DRP envisions a comprehensive overhaul of the 253.7-hectare Dharavi area, integrating residential, commercial, and industrial spaces. A key component of the plan is the establishment of a Multi-Modal Transport Hub (MMTH), connecting Metro Lines 3, 8, and 11, along with the redevelopment of Mahim and Sion railway stations. This connectivity aims to enhance mobility and reduce congestion, facilitating seamless access to various parts of the city.
Under the DRP, over 72,000 new tenements will be constructed, each measuring 350 sq ft and equipped with independent kitchens and toilets. This provision exceeds the standard sizes offered in previous slum redevelopment projects, reflecting a commitment to improving living conditions. Additionally, the project will introduce wide, interconnected streets every 125 meters, enhancing accessibility and walkability within the community. The DRP emphasizes preserving Dharavi’s unique cultural and economic identity. It aims to retain the live-work ecosystem by integrating facilities for small-scale industries and commercial units, providing residents with opportunities for economic empowerment. Furthermore, the plan includes the development of social infrastructure such as schools, healthcare facilities, community halls, and cultural centers, ensuring holistic development.
While the DRP has garnered widespread support, certain challenges persist. Some residents have expressed concerns over resettlement and eligibility criteria. The Maharashtra government has initiated over 50,000 door-to-door surveys to address these issues and ensure transparency in the rehabilitation process. The final approval of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project marks a pivotal moment in Mumbai’s urban development journey. By focusing on sustainability, inclusivity, and economic empowerment, the project aspires to set a benchmark for urban redevelopment in India. As construction progresses, the DRP holds the potential to transform Dharavi into a model of modern urban living, balancing development with cultural preservation and environmental sustainability.
