Maharashtra CM Flags Off 380 Ganpati Special Trains From CSMT To Sawantwadi

Mumbai has commenced its annual Ganpati Special train operations, with the first service flagged off from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to Sawantwadi in Konkan. This year, Indian Railways has scheduled 380 special trains, marking the highest number in the festival’s history, to meet the significant travel demand from devotees returning to their hometowns. Central Railway will operate the majority of services, covering 296 trips, while Western, South Western, and Konkan Railways will manage the remaining routes.

Officials from Indian Railways and Central Railway highlighted the need for expanded services, citing the growing festive travel rush and the need to ensure safe, comfortable, and timely journeys for passengers. Special trains will halt at strategic stations across Konkan, including Ratnagiri, Chiplun, Khed, Kankavali, and Sawantwadi Road, ensuring convenient access to major towns along the route. Additionally, 550 buses are scheduled to complement train services, providing last-mile connectivity for travellers during Ganesh Chaturthi from August 27 to September 6. This expansion reflects a steady increase in services over the past three years. In 2023, 305 special trips were operated, while in 2024, the count rose to 358, demonstrating a strategic response to rising demand. Central Railway’s proactive planning aims to reduce congestion on major routes, particularly along the Konkan corridor, which experiences heavy passenger inflow during festivals. Indian Railways has employed a combination of real-time ticketing, app-based scheduling, and coordinated bus operations to optimise crowd management and ensure adherence to safety protocols.

The train composition for these special services has been carefully structured to accommodate different passenger classes. Each train includes First AC, AC 2-tier, AC 3-tier, Sleeper, and General Second Class coaches, as well as pantry and generator cars. Experts noted that this configuration addresses both comfort and operational efficiency, while also reducing potential strain on urban transport networks. Railway authorities emphasised that meticulous planning and monitoring will continue throughout the festival period. Advanced scheduling software and crowd management systems are being leveraged to predict passenger loads and adjust operations dynamically. Safety protocols, sanitisation standards, and service reliability have been prioritised to ensure an equitable travel experience for all passengers. Officials also underscored that these measures contribute to sustainable urban mobility by offering a greener alternative to road travel, aligning with wider zero-carbon transport initiatives.

As Ganeshotsav approaches, these special trains will remain a critical lifeline for devotees commuting between Mumbai and the Konkan region. The combined rail and bus network is designed to enhance commuter convenience, reduce traffic bottlenecks, and maintain operational efficiency. Passengers are encouraged to book tickets in advance and stay informed of train schedules via official digital platforms to ensure seamless travel.
