Maharashtra Clears Metro Rail And Road Projects Worth Thousands Of Crores

Maharashtra has approved a landmark set of infrastructure projects spanning multiple cities, signalling a major push towards modern, climate-resilient urban mobility. Key initiatives include a fully underground metro corridor in Mumbai, a direct elevated road link connecting Thane to Navi Mumbai International Airport, procurement of 268 fully air-conditioned suburban trains, railway expansions in Pune, and significant regional upgrades in Nagpur. Officials emphasised that the programme is designed to integrate urban transport, enhance accessibility, and support sustainable economic growth.

At the heart of the package is Metro Line 11, a 16-km underground corridor linking Wadala Depot with the Gateway of India. Planned to serve key commercial and heritage zones, the Rs 240 billion project will be financed through international collaboration. Urban mobility experts note that the line is expected to reduce congestion in south Mumbai while promoting cleaner, low-carbon transport through the historic city core. In Mumbai’s suburban network, authorities have cleared 268 modern AC train rakes under the third and third-A phases of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project. These replacements will phase out ageing, doorless trains and offer energy-efficient, climate-controlled carriages with enhanced passenger safety and comfort. Officials also confirmed that ticket pricing will remain unchanged, preserving commuter affordability.

The state has also sanctioned a 25-km elevated road corridor connecting Thane with Navi Mumbai International Airport. Experts highlight that this link will reduce travel times, relieve traffic on congested arterial roads, and facilitate faster movement of goods and passengers between two rapidly growing urban hubs. The corridor is expected to enhance industrial logistics while promoting sustainable regional transport. In Pune, authorities approved the addition of third and fourth tracks along the busy Pune–Lonavala route, aimed at easing congestion and improving operational efficiency. Two new metro stations at Balajinagar-Bibwewadi and Swargate-Katraj have also been cleared to strengthen east–west connectivity, offering residents faster and greener commuting options.

Nagpur features prominently with approvals for a new ring road and township development to accommodate projected population growth and industrial expansion. Officials suggest that these measures will promote balanced regional development and provide equitable access to infrastructure for emerging urban communities. Urban planners and analysts view the combined approvals as a strategic move towards an integrated, climate-conscious transport network. By linking metro corridors, suburban rail, and regional road networks, Maharashtra is investing in a sustainable future that balances efficiency, accessibility, and environmental responsibility.
