Maharashtra is striving to catch up with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious ‘Housing for All’ programme, as data reveals it has only achieved 27 percent of the targeted number of houses for economically weaker sections under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in urban areas.
To expedite the implementation of PMAY in urban areas, the state housing department has recently established a dedicated Project Management Unit (PMU). This unit operates directly under the supervision of the additional chief secretary of the department, Valsa Nair Singh, who is responsible for overseeing all PMAY projects.
MahaHousing serves as the implementing agency for PMAY (Urban) in the state. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) acts as the state’s nodal agency for PMAY (Urban) to create affordable housing by redeveloping old colonies.
Mhada is already heavily engaged in its core duties and lacks necessary resources to micromanage PMAY (Urban) projects. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who oversees the housing portfolio, expressed dissatisfaction with the scheme’s progress.
