Maharashtra has set an ambitious target to bring 25 lakh hectares of farmland under natural farming, marking a major step toward sustainable agriculture. Officials describe the initiative as a transformative measure to reduce cultivation costs, improve soil health, and enhance farmer incomes while promoting eco-friendly practices. The state aims to position itself as a leader in natural farming, following models established by other progressive Indian states.
Government experts highlighted that increasing production costs remain the foremost challenge for farmers across Maharashtra. “Reducing input costs while maintaining high yields is critical for agricultural sustainability,” said officials. They added that natural farming leverages locally available resources for fertilisers, pest control, and nutrient management, enabling farmers to lower expenses without compromising productivity. State authorities emphasised that natural farming differs from organic farming, focusing on ecological balance, reduced chemical inputs, and long-term sustainability. Natural farming prioritises on-site composting, cow-based inputs, and soil restoration techniques that improve fertility while maintaining environmental health. Officials noted that past initiatives often merged organic and natural methods without distinction, but the new strategy dedicates 25 lakh hectares exclusively to natural farming practices.
The move also addresses growing concerns about the health impact of chemical-based agriculture. Experts pointed out that chemical fertilisers and pesticides contribute to toxins in food, which may be linked to chronic diseases such as cancer. By contrast, produce cultivated under natural farming methods is considered healthier, nutrient-rich, and environmentally sustainable. The initiative integrates cow-based inputs to maintain soil fertility and ecological balance, further reinforcing sustainability objectives. Officials emphasised that natural farming can significantly reduce water consumption, potentially saving up to 50% compared with conventional farming. By enhancing groundwater levels and reducing dependence on chemical inputs, these practices contribute to improved soil health and long-term agricultural resilience. Experts noted that the approach aligns with Maharashtra’s broader goals of sustainable urban and rural development.
Authorities acknowledged that natural farming requires extensive public awareness and training for farmers. Misconceptions about lower yields remain a barrier to adoption, but sharing success stories and providing technical guidance can help overcome resistance. State officials confirmed that integration with existing schemes and close monitoring of the 25 lakh hectares will ensure effective implementation while maximising socio-economic and environmental benefits. Maharashtra’s natural farming initiative is designed not only to increase farmer income but also to strengthen ecological sustainability and urban-rural health outcomes.
