Mumbai is set to observe Mahaparinirvan Diwas 2024, marking the 68th death anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, with solemnity and respect. In preparation for the occasion, the city collector has announced a dry day in specific parts of Mumbai, and the Maharashtra government has declared December 6 as a public holiday in the city and its suburbs.
An official order issued by Mumbai City District Collector Sanjay Yadav stated that all liquor shops, including wholesale and retail outlets selling Indian and foreign liquor, will remain closed in designated areas. For establishments under the jurisdiction of police stations such as N.M. Joshi Marg, Worli, Bhoiwada, and Matunga, liquor sales will be restricted as follows: Shops in the N.M. Joshi Marg and Worli Police Station areas will shut from 5 pm on December 5, 2024, until the end of December 6, 2024.
Outlets in the Bhoiwada and Matunga Police Station areas will remain closed for the entire day on December 6.
In addition to these restrictions, the Maharashtra government has declared a local public holiday for state government and semi-government offices in Mumbai and its suburban regions on December 6.
This gesture acknowledges the legacy and contributions of Dr. Ambedkar, a pioneer of social justice and the principal architect of the Indian Constitution. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Traffic Police has issued an advisory highlighting diversions and restrictions around Dadar’s Shivaji Park, where Chaitya Bhoomi—the memorial site of Dr. Ambedkar—is located. From December 4 to December 7, thousands of followers are expected to visit Chaitya Bhoomi to pay their respects. Consequently, vehicular traffic in the vicinity, including adjoining roads, is likely to be disrupted. To manage the large gatherings and ensure smooth traffic flow, restrictions will be in place from 6 am on December 5 until December 7. Mahaparinirvan Diwas serves as a significant day of remembrance, honouring Dr. Ambedkar’s unwavering commitment to equality and justice. The arrangements underscore the city’s efforts to facilitate peaceful observance while minimising public inconvenience.
