Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) is proceeding with the construction of a foot overbridge (FOB) near the Baba Bhide Bridge in Deccan Gymkhana.
The project, which began in April, aims to connect the Deccan Gymkhana Metro Station to the Narayan Peth area, enhancing pedestrian access across the Mutha River. The construction has necessitated the closure of the Bhide Bridge to vehicular traffic until June 6, causing significant traffic disruptions in the area. To mitigate the impact, authorities have coordinated with traffic police to manage vehicular movement and have advised commuters to use alternative routes.
Given the potential for water discharge from the Khadakwasla Dam due to heavy rainfall, Maha Metro has developed a contingency plan to evacuate machinery and materials from the construction site promptly. The dam, which has a live storage capacity of 1.97 TMC, was at 48% capacity as of Wednesday. While recent rains have increased water levels, the irrigation department has halted water discharge into the Mutha canal to manage resources effectively. Maha Metro officials are in constant communication with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the state irrigation department to monitor the situation. They have assured that work will continue unless a discharge alert necessitates evacuation. In such an event, equipment will be swiftly removed to prevent damage.
The construction of the FOB involves the use of cranes and heavy machinery, and is part of a broader initiative to improve pedestrian infrastructure in Pune. The project aligns with the city’s goals of promoting sustainable and eco-friendly urban development. Local residents have expressed concerns about the risk of flooding, recalling last year’s sudden discharge from the Khadakwasla Dam that led to significant water level rises in the Mutha River and flooding in low-lying areas. They have urged the PMC and city police to restrict parking along riverside roads to prevent potential hazards.
To enhance flood preparedness, the Pune district administration has implemented an early flood warning system for the Khadakwasla Dam. This includes issuing pre-release alerts before dam water is discharged, removing debris from riverbeds, and ensuring stormwater drains are cleared to prevent urban flooding. As Pune continues to navigate the challenges of monsoon season, the ongoing FOB construction near the Baba Bhide Bridge exemplifies the city’s commitment to infrastructure development while prioritizing safety and sustainability.
