Madurai city’s Athikulam and Palanisamy Nagar will soon get newly laid tar roads at a cost of ₹1.17 crore. The initiative, led by DMK MLA G. Thalapathi and city officials, also includes key civic upgrades such as parks, anganwadi centres, and water supply trials under the AMRUT scheme. Officials assure quality execution and accelerated progress across all affected zones.
DMK MLA G. Thalapathi, alongside Mayor Indrani Pon Vasanth, inaugurated the roadworks with a bhoomi puja ceremony at Palanisamy Nagar. The ₹1.17 crore project, spread across the Athikulam and Palanisamy Nagar areas in the Madurai North Assembly constituency, marks part of a broader infrastructure push covering all 100 corporation wards. Tenders have been floated and awarded, and work is scheduled to begin immediately.
Emphasising adherence to quality standards, Thalapathi noted that the roadworks would follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) laid out by the civic body. The Corporation will oversee each stage of the road-laying process to prevent substandard work.Additionally, he inaugurated a children’s park at DRO Colony Main Road and opened a new anganwadi centre and a community hall in Jawaharpuram and Viswanathapuram.
Parallelly, Minister P. Moorthy inspected the progress of the AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) drinking water supply project at Narayanapuram. The project aims to deliver potable water to Madurai from the Mullaperiyar river. Initial trial runs have been underway in select wards, with some technical issues such as pipe bursts and leaks being resolved promptly by engineering teams.
Many experts, and other senior officials briefed the minister on the project’s multiple phases and progress in newly added wards. The minister urged swift completion of both the water supply and underground drainage (UGD) projects. Discussions also included roadwork updates in the Madurai West constituency, signalling broader infrastructure development under coordinated governance.
The ₹1.17 crore road development in Athikulam and Palanisamy Nagar, coupled with AMRUT water trials and community amenities, showcases a coordinated civic upgrade in Madurai. With political leadership and administrative teams actively monitoring quality and speed, residents can expect tangible improvements in infrastructure and public services.
