Madhya Pradesh Urban Projects Get Rs 1 Lakh Crore Backing From HUDCO
In a strategic move aimed at reshaping Madhya Pradesh’s urban infrastructure, the Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO) has pledged financial support of Rs 1 lakh crore over five years. The commitment was formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Madhya Pradesh Urban Development Company Limited (MPUDCL), signalling a pivotal public sector collaboration to drive inclusive and sustainable urbanisation.
The agreement, signed in Indore, underscores the state’s aggressive push to improve liveability standards through targeted investments in affordable housing, sanitation, water supply, solid waste management and smart mobility. Officials familiar with the development said the initiative is expected to bolster municipal capacity while leveraging central financial support for high-impact infrastructure delivery. Under the terms of the MoU, HUDCO will not only offer financial assistance but also provide technical consultancy and capacity-building support. Authorities emphasised that such integrated assistance is essential to ensure project viability and long-term impact, particularly in tier-2 and tier-3 urban centres of the state where infrastructure gaps remain acute.
With Madhya Pradesh’s urban population expected to rise sharply in the coming decade, the partnership is seen as crucial for addressing the demand for resilient civic amenities, climate-aligned mobility solutions, and inclusive housing. The projects under this pact will prioritise low-income communities and climate-resilient urban planning principles, aligning with India’s broader net-zero goals. Experts noted that this level of public investment marks a turning point in the decentralisation of urban policy implementation. By empowering state agencies with both capital and knowledge support, the HUDCO-MPUDCL collaboration could set a precedent for other states seeking to scale up equitable urban development.
While the MoU remains non-binding, officials indicated that project-level financing decisions will follow institutional due diligence, enabling timely deployment of funds across various sectors. If executed efficiently, the partnership could accelerate Madhya Pradesh’s journey towards cleaner, greener, and more inclusive cities.
