Maharashtra Faces Guillain-Barre Syndrome Outbreak with 167 Cases and 7 Deaths
Maharashtra is grappling with a concerning outbreak of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare but serious autoimmune disorder that affects the peripheral nervous system. The state health department has confirmed 167 cases of GBS, with 192 suspected cases. Tragically, seven deaths have been reported, one of which was confirmed as being caused by GBS, while six others are suspected to be linked to the condition. This outbreak has raised alarm, particularly in the Pune region, where authorities are ramping up efforts to contain the spread of the disease.
The outbreak is concentrated in various parts of Pune, with 39 cases from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) area and 91 cases from newly added villages in the same jurisdiction. The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and surrounding rural areas have also reported significant numbers, with 29 cases from PCMC and 25 from Pune Rural. Smaller numbers have emerged from other districts as well, reflecting the widespread nature of the outbreak. As of the latest reports, 48 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with 21 requiring ventilators to aid their breathing. The severity of the condition has prompted the Maharashtra Health Department to intensify its surveillance efforts, closely monitoring the affected regions and providing immediate care to those in need. On a more positive note, 91 patients have been successfully treated and discharged.
Authorities have taken swift action to investigate the potential sources of the outbreak. In particular, the PMC has sealed 30 private water supply plants located in the Nanded village, Dhayari, and adjoining areas of Sinhgad Road in Pune. These areas have been identified as the epicentre of the outbreak. Water samples from these plants were found to be contaminated with Escherichia coli bacteria, a harmful pathogen that can lead to severe gastrointestinal and systemic infections. Some of the water plants also lacked the necessary operational permits and failed to use disinfectants, such as chlorine, to control bacterial contamination. The health department’s efforts to address these issues include ensuring that proper water treatment protocols are in place, which may have played a role in the spread of GBS in these communities. The crackdown on unlicensed and unsanitary water supply plants underscores the importance of clean and safe drinking water in preventing public health crises like this one.
In response to the growing concern, the Union Health Minister convened a high-level meeting with Maharashtra’s key health and medical officials on February 3, 2025. The meeting focused on reviewing the public health measures being undertaken in the state, which include extensive testing for GBS, monitoring affected patients, and improving the overall response to the outbreak. Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a rare condition where the immune system attacks the body’s peripheral nervous system, leading to symptoms such as muscle weakness, numbness, and in severe cases, paralysis.
