Lucknow Widens Green Corridor Plan With Redesigns

Lucknow’s flagship Green Corridor initiative has entered a critical stage as the city accelerates redesign works at several major intersections to prepare for an expected surge in movement across the upcoming mobility network. The upgrades are part of a wider push to build smoother, low-carbon and commuter-centred mobility routes across the state capital.

The redesign effort, led by the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA), focuses on junctions at Nishatganj, Daliganj, Samta Mulak, Badshahnagar and nearby stretches segments that currently experience heavy congestion, especially during peak hours. These nodes will serve as primary exit and entry points once the corridor is fully operational, making their engineering crucial for the broader project’s success. According to officials, the ongoing works include widening existing carriageways, creating dedicated lanes for uninterrupted through-traffic, and carving out safer turning pockets to reduce conflict points.

Smart adaptive signalling, designed to respond to real-time flow patterns, is also being installed to limit idling time and reduce emissions at busy crossings. Work is already visibly advancing in the Daliganj and Nishatganj areas, where excavations, barrier installations and lane demarcation have begun. Urban planners tracking the project say that intersection design is often the most defining element of any corridor-based mobility system. “A corridor functions only as well as the junctions feeding into it,” one mobility expert noted, explaining that poorly managed intersections can negate the benefits of well-built stretches. In a city such as Lucknow where population growth, rising vehicle ownership and mixed land-use create daily travel pressures efficient junction control becomes essential to improving both mobility and public safety. The Green Corridor project, launched in 2022–23, aims to connect key city nodes through 12 strategic stretches redesigned as green, congestion-free routes. The first phase, completed between Basantkunj and Kudia Ghat, introduced smoother alignments and pedestrian-friendly elements. The second phase, linking Kudia Ghat to Nishatganj, is nearing completion, while the upcoming third phase will extend the corridor towards Samta Mulak Crossing—a segment with some of the city’s busiest neighbourhoods.

An LDA official said the latest upgrades mark one of the most critical phases in the multi-year initiative. “Junction improvements at Nishatganj and Daliganj are progressing rapidly. Similar works will follow in adjacent locations so that the corridor operates as a cohesive, seamless system,” the official added. Completed sections, they noted, have already demonstrated measurable improvements in travel time. For residents, the project’s transformation of high-pressure intersections could significantly ease daily travel, reduce long-standing bottlenecks and contribute to a more breathable urban environment. While challenges such as construction-related inconvenience and traffic diversions will continue in the short term, planners argue that these are essential steps towards a safer, more inclusive and climate-conscious mobility framework. If executed systematically, Lucknow’s Green Corridor could support the state capital’s long-term transition towards cleaner transport, more walkable streets and a mobility network that supports both economic activity and equitable urban access.
