Lucknow is set to enhance its rail connectivity to Bihar and West Bengal as Indian Railways introduces two new Amrit Bharat Express trains from Gomtinagar. These weekly services, one bound for Darbhanga and the other for Malda Town, will commence as special trains from July 18. The launch will be virtually inaugurated by the nation’s leader, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing regional transport infrastructure. Both routes will notably run via Ayodhya, strengthening connections to significant cultural and economic hubs, offering improved travel options for passengers.
Railway authorities have issued timetable notifications, with orders for regular operation expected soon. The Malda Town – Gomtinagar – Malda Town Amrit Bharat Express will depart Malda Town every Thursday evening, arriving at Gomtinagar on Friday afternoon. Its return journey will begin Friday evening, reaching Malda Town the following day. This train will feature 22 coaches, comprising a mix of sleeper and general classes, offering affordable travel. Key halts include New Farakka, Sahibganj, Bhagalpur, Gaya, Varanasi, Shahganj, and Ayodhya. Similarly, the Darbhanga – Gomtinagar – Darbhanga Amrit Bharat Express will leave Darbhanga every Saturday afternoon, reaching Gomtinagar early Sunday morning, with the return service departing Gomtinagar on Sunday morning. Important stoppages for this train include Ayodhya Cantt, Gorakhpur, Raxaul, and Janakpur Road.

Both Amrit Bharat Express trains are equipped with WAP-5 class engines in a push-pull configuration, featuring one locomotive at the front and another at the rear. This design aims to provide a smoother ride with better acceleration and deceleration. While the technology promises enhanced efficiency, the average speeds remain modest, reflecting the focus on affordable, comfortable long-distance travel over high-speed transit for the common passenger. For instance, the Gomtinagar to Malda Town journey, spanning 971 kilometers, will take approximately 22 hours, with an average speed of around 42.77 km/h. In the reverse direction, the speed slightly improves. The strategic launch of these services underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to expanding its network, providing vital links between growing regional centers and addressing the demand for accessible and convenient inter-state travel.
The introduction of these two Amrit Bharat Express trains marks a significant stride in enhancing regional rail connectivity between Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. By providing affordable and comfortable long-distance travel options, these services align with the broader national agenda of infrastructure development and inclusive growth, improving accessibility for millions of passengers.
