Indian Railways is deploying a 16-coach Vande Bharat Express on the Gorakhpur–Ayodhya–Lucknow–Prayagraj corridor, replacing the existing 8-coach model from June 8. The upgrade positions this service as India’s second longest Vande Bharat configuration and marks a substantial capacity enhancement on one of the country’s busiest intercity routes. The shift to a larger rake addresses an ongoing surge in ridership, particularly on the stretch connecting Uttar Pradesh’s cultural, political, and religious hubs.
The upgraded train will maintain the same schedule, route, and stoppages under train numbers 22549/22550 but will now offer significantly improved seating capacity, onboard comfort, and passenger experience. The new 16-coach setup consists of two Executive Chair Cars and 14 General Chair Cars, ensuring a premium yet inclusive travel environment. It also incorporates refinements to ride quality, onboard systems, and passenger amenities — features that have made the Vande Bharat series increasingly popular among both daily commuters and long-distance travellers. This expansion comes on the back of a successful high-speed trial conducted between Gorakhpur and Nautanwa on June 1, where the train demonstrated operational efficiency at speeds of 110 kmph. Following clearance from the Mechanical Department and scheduling finalisation by the Operations Department, the new rake is now ready for full deployment.
This development is more than just a logistical upgrade. It aligns with broader efforts to decentralise infrastructure improvements across regions, ensuring that high-performance, eco-conscious rail services are not restricted to metro corridors. Given that rail travel remains the most energy-efficient mode of mass transit in India, the introduction of high-capacity electric trains like the Vande Bharat plays a pivotal role in reducing carbon footprints while meeting the travel needs of millions. For cities like Ayodhya and Prayagraj, both key centres for spiritual tourism and growing urbanisation, such upgrades are critical. The enhanced rail connectivity is expected to ease pressure on road transport, offer safer alternatives for long-distance travel, and reinforce sustainable mobility solutions in the state.
The decision also frees up the older 8-coach Vande Bharat rake, which Indian Railways plans to redeploy elsewhere, possibly in emerging regional corridors where demand is growing but current infrastructure is under stress. From an equity perspective, the expanded service benefits not just premium travellers, but also the general passenger class. The design of the Vande Bharat fleet combines high-speed performance with ergonomic design, on-board infotainment, bio-vacuum toilets, and improved safety systems — features that contribute to a dignified and modern travel experience for all. With demand for faster, greener rail alternatives rising across India, the expansion of the Vande Bharat footprint on critical routes like Gorakhpur–Prayagraj signals a maturing transport strategy. This move balances technological advancement with social utility, making the benefits of smart rail infrastructure accessible to a broader section of the public.
