Lucknow to Modernise Tubewells for Green Irrigation

Uttar Pradesh government has announced a massive overhaul of the state’s irrigation infrastructure. The plan involves the eco-friendly reconstruction and modernisation of 1,750 government-operated tubewells, targeting improved water access for nearly 2.5 lakh farmer families.

The two-year project is designed to enhance irrigation capacity across 1.75 lakh hectares of farmland. But the initiative goes beyond routine infrastructure development—it marks a decisive shift towards integrating sustainability in rural utility systems. According to senior officials in Lucknow, the modernised tubewells will incorporate energy-efficient technologies, while the surrounding areas will be landscaped with plantation drives aimed at expanding the state’s green cover.

The renewed tubewell network is expected to reduce irrigation dependency on fossil fuels and groundwater exploitation, both pressing issues in north Indian agrarian zones. With diesel-powered pumps increasingly seen as unsustainable, the transition to eco-friendly units is projected to cut carbon emissions and lower operational costs for farmers.Additionally, the government is piloting a hybrid solar-powered system to operate minor branch canals. This model not only aligns with national solar energy goals but also represents a scalable, clean solution for rural irrigation where electric grid access remains inconsistent or unreliable.

As part of this sustainability push, a state-wide survey is underway for the construction of 21 new minor canals that will also operate on hybrid solar energy. These new channels are intended to improve the utilisation of surface water, an important measure as groundwater reserves continue to dwindle across many districts in Uttar Pradesh.Officials maintain that integrating green energy into irrigation systems will reduce the carbon footprint of farming operations and contribute to long-term cost reductions. “The broader vision is to blend climate resilience with modern irrigation. This will not only reduce our dependence on conventional energy but also improve the livelihoods of small and marginal farmers,” a government spokesperson said.

The initiative is poised to make a significant socioeconomic impact, especially in districts where agriculture remains the primary source of income. By delivering better irrigation at a lower cost and without environmental degradation, the project aligns with the national objectives of doubling farmers’ income and promoting climate-smart agriculture.Moreover, the use of solar-hybrid technology fits into the larger goals of India’s commitments under the Paris Agreement, where the transition to non-fossil fuel-based energy and conservation of natural resources remains central.

While the project will require coordinated execution across multiple departments, its potential to transform the rural landscape in Uttar Pradesh is undeniable. With energy prices volatile and climate uncertainties on the rise, such sustainable interventions offer a viable, long-term solution.

Whether the plan succeeds at scale will depend on timely implementation, maintenance of infrastructure, and continuous training for end-users. But if executed effectively, this eco-forward irrigation strategy may well become a blueprint for other states aiming to balance agricultural growth with climate resilience.
