Lucknow to Ease Traffic with Free Left Turns and Safety Upgrades

Lucknow is set to upgrade its traffic infrastructure. The city will soon introduce free left-turn lanes at six major intersections, allowing vehicles to turn left without waiting for traffic signals. This initiative, aimed at easing traffic flow, will provide relief at key congestion points, including areas near Husadiya underpass, Hazratganj, Chinhat Square, Shaheed Path, and Samtamulk. With this improvement, officials estimate a 50-60% reduction in traffic load at these busy spots, offering commuters a smoother experience.

The proposal for these upgrades was made by the divisional commissioner, followed by a detailed survey conducted by the Public Works Department (PWD) to identify problem areas. Satyendra Nath, Executive Engineer of PWD, explained that free left turns will be implemented at intersections that often suffer from heavy traffic jams, which have been a source of frustration for daily commuters. These improvements are expected to significantly reduce congestion, especially during peak hours.

Along with the free left-turn lanes, nine accident-prone roads will receive safety upgrades to reduce risks and enhance the overall safety of drivers and pedestrians. These high-risk stretches include roads from Indira Gandhi Pratishthan to the ministers’ residence, Hazratganj to Charbagh Railway Station, and Shaheed Path. The project, with a budget of Rs 1.75 crore, will address critical “black spots” and improve footpath conditions to ensure better safety for pedestrians. The tendering process for this initiative is underway, with completion expected within three months. Once implemented, the combination of free left-turn lanes and safety measures will provide much-needed relief to thousands of daily commuters in Lucknow.
