The Uttar Pradesh government is poised to embark on an ambitious statewide greening initiative, commencing July 18, with the development of a series of ‘thematic forests’. This concerted effort, a significant component of the ‘Ek Ped Maa ke Naam 2.0’ campaign, seeks to not only expand the state’s green cover but also imbue tree plantation drives with deeper social and environmental significance. Following a remarkable feat of planting over 370 million saplings recently, this new phase underlines a strategic shift towards curated green spaces, aiming to foster eco-friendly and sustainable environments across Uttar Pradesh.
The pioneering phase of this initiative will witness the establishment of ‘Eklavya Van’ in Mirzapur on Friday, July 18. This particular forest will honour the tribal icon Birsa Munda on his 150th birth anniversary, demonstrating an integration of environmental action with cultural and historical tributes. Beyond mere afforestation, the thematic forests are designed to serve multiple ecological and societal purposes. For instance, ‘Oxy Van’ will specifically target air pollution control and environmental balance, with its development commencing on July 19. This strategic approach highlights a clear intent to address critical environmental challenges while creating public green assets.
The state Forest Department has meticulously planned and assigned responsibilities for the year-long development of these thematic green spaces. The initiative is being promoted with the fervour of a grand festival, encouraging widespread public participation and fostering a sense of collective ownership. Subsequent thematic forests include ‘Shakti Van’ from July 21, celebrating women empowerment, and ‘Triveni Van’ from July 23, dedicated to the successful organisation of Maha Kumbh 2025. These initiatives not only contribute to environmental resilience but also weave green development into the social fabric of the state, promoting gender-neutral and equitable access to nature.
Further bolstering this green revolution, ‘Atal Van’ will be developed from July 25 to commemorate the centenary celebration of a former Prime Minister. ‘Gopal Van’ will find its place in cowsheds from July 27, while ‘Ekta Van’ from July 31 will mark the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. A poignant ‘Sindoor Van’ will be established from August 15, honouring fallen soldiers, turning remembrance into tangible environmental benefit. These distinct themes aim to resonate deeply with citizens, encouraging emotional connection and long-term stewardship of the planted saplings.

Complementing these thematic forests, the government is also pushing innovative concepts such as ‘Rakshabandhan Vatika’, promoting sibling bonding through tree planting, and ‘Ek Ped Guru ke Naam’, a tribute to educators. The focus extends beyond initial plantation to rigorous conservation efforts, especially during the monsoon season. This multi-faceted approach, combining large-scale plantation with thematic development and community engagement, positions Uttar Pradesh as a frontrunner in fostering a zero net carbon future. By creating diverse, purpose-driven green spaces, the state is actively building healthier, more liveable cities and rural areas, demonstrating a holistic commitment to environmental well-being for all.
