The second phase of the Lucknow Metro, an 11.2-kilometre corridor connecting Charbagh to Vasant Kunj, is poised for final approval from the Public Investment Board (PIB).
The Uttar Pradesh government has already sanctioned the ₹5,801 crore project, which has also cleared evaluations by the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and the Network Planning Group (NPG) . This expansion aims to bolster east-west connectivity in Lucknow, integrating with the existing 22.87-kilometre Airport-Munshipulia line to create a comprehensive 34-kilometre metro network. The corridor will feature 12 stations—seven underground, including Charbagh, Aminabad, and Chowk, and five elevated stations such as Thakurganj and Vasant Kunj .
The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has set an ambitious target to complete the project within four years, a significant reduction from the initial six-year timeline. Preliminary groundwork, including soil testing, is already 40% complete, indicating steady progress towards the commencement of full-scale construction . The upcoming PIB meeting, anticipated by the end of April, is expected to be a pivotal moment for the project. Upon receiving the green light, the project will proceed to the tendering phase, marking the transition from planning to execution .
This phase of the metro expansion is not just a transportation project but a stride towards sustainable urban development. By enhancing public transit options, it aims to reduce reliance on private vehicles, thereby decreasing traffic congestion and lowering carbon emissions. The integration of underground and elevated stations is designed to minimize the project’s footprint, preserving the city’s historical and cultural sites while modernizing its infrastructure.
The successful implementation of this project is expected to serve as a model for similar urban transit initiatives across India, demonstrating the feasibility of rapid, sustainable infrastructure development in growing cities. As Lucknow prepares to embark on this transformative journey, the metro expansion stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to progress and environmental stewardship.
