 Lucknow Metro Phase 1B to Begin by Diwali

The much-anticipated East-West Corridor of the Lucknow Metro, designated as Phase 1B, is poised to commence construction by this Diwali, following the recent approval from the Public Investment Board (PIB) under the Ministry of Finance.

The project, estimated at ₹5,801 crore, awaits final clearance from the Union Cabinet before work can begin. Spanning approximately 11.165 kilometres, the corridor will connect Charbagh, a central transit hub, to the emerging residential area of Vasant Kunj. The route will feature 12 stations, with seven underground and five elevated, facilitating seamless travel across the city. The underground section is expected to present significant logistical and engineering challenges, while the elevated stretch will enhance connectivity to rapidly developing areas.

This corridor will integrate with the existing North-South Metro Corridor at Charbagh, creating a comprehensive metro network that spans approximately 35 km. The expansion is anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce carbon emissions, and provide a reliable public transportation option for the city’s residents. In alignment with sustainable urban development goals, the project emphasizes eco-friendly construction practices and aims to contribute to zero net carbon emissions. The inclusion of stations in densely populated areas such as Aminabad and Chowk will promote equitable access to public transportation, benefiting a diverse demographic       The East-West Corridor is expected to stimulate local economies by improving accessibility to commercial centres and residential areas. The development is projected to create numerous employment opportunities during and after construction, contributing to the city’s economic growth.

With the PIB’s approval and pending Union Cabinet clearance, the East-West Corridor is set to transform Lucknow’s urban landscape. The project reflects a commitment to sustainable, inclusive, and efficient public transportation, positioning Lucknow as a forward-thinking metropolis. As construction progresses, stakeholders will continue to monitor the project’s impact on urban mobility, environmental sustainability, and economic development, ensuring that it meets the needs of the city’s growing population.
