Lucknow’s urban development minister AK Sharma has issued a directive to the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) to execute a rigorous cleaning campaign aimed at averting waterlogging, sanitation issues, and the spread of communicable diseases during the monsoon season. This initiative comes amidst a 72-hour non-stop drive by the LMC to cleanse drains and mitigate potential hazards associated with heavy rainfall.
During his inspection, Minister Sharma underscored the critical importance of thorough drain cleaning across all zones of Lucknow. He appointed nodal officers in each area to oversee and evaluate cleaning operations, employing drone technology where necessary for comprehensive surveillance. Emphasizing the functionality of flood pumping stations and pumping sets, Sharma cautioned LMC officials against any lapses in their duties to ensure effective water management.
Specific areas under scrutiny included Zone Eight, where Sharma personally reviewed drain systems from Bangla Bazaar crossing to Khazana Square, Kila Mohammadi drain from Khazana Square to the railway undercrossing, and drains from Smriti Upvan Square to Power House Square. He issued directives for immediate action, such as covering open drains with slabs, repairing broken walls, and removing silt accumulation to prevent blockages.
During the inspection, local residents, including Madan Singh and Anand Tiwari from Sector N-1, voiced concerns about encroachments and the overflow of sewer water onto roads, exacerbated by a malfunctioning sewage treatment plant (STP). Present at the inspection were local councillors, municipal commissioner Indrajit Singh, chief engineer Mahesh Verma, and officials from Zone Eight, highlighting the collaborative effort to address community grievances and improve infrastructure resilience.
Minister Sharma’s proactive approach reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure and public health standards amidst seasonal challenges. The coordinated efforts of LMC and regulatory authorities aim to streamline drainage systems, mitigate flood risks, and safeguard public health from vector-borne diseases like dengue and chikungunya.
