Lucknow Kanpur Expressway Nears Completion Reducing Travel Time Drastically
Lucknow is on the verge of a major transportation milestone as the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway nears completion, promising to slash travel time between the two cities to just one hour. Spanning 63 kilometres, the six-lane access-controlled corridor designated as National Expressway 6 (NE 6) is expected to enhance connectivity, boost trade, and strengthen economic ties across the Awadh region. Officials confirmed that only minor works remain, with final preparations for inauguration set for early December 2025.
The expressway will run parallel to the existing 85-kilometre stretch of National Highway 27, starting near Shaheed Path in South Lucknow and connecting key points such as Bani, Kantha, Amarsas, and terminating near Azad Marg in Kanpur, where it links to Udyog Path. A significant intersection with the Ganga Expressway in Unnao district further integrates the route into Uttar Pradesh’s growing expressway network.Three strategically located rest areas have been constructed at Aderwa (Nevarna), Padri Khurd, and Unnao, offering facilities for passengers including a 10-bed hospital, trauma centre, and ambulance services. Entry and exit ramps have been prepared at six points, while five toll plazas are positioned along the route, ensuring smooth traffic management. Importantly, authorities have confirmed that no liquor outlets will operate along the corridor, in line with regional policy directives.
Construction has progressed steadily since its foundation stone was laid in 2019, with subsequent notifications and approvals formalising its status as NE 6. Compensation of ₹800 crore has been disbursed to farmers affected by land acquisition across 42 villages in Lucknow and Unnao, reflecting a commitment to equitable development.Officials highlighted the expressway’s potential as an economic corridor, capable of stimulating industry, trade, and employment opportunities. The 18-kilometre elevated section in Lucknow remains under construction, with the entire expressway scheduled for completion by 30 November 2025. A trial run will precede the official opening to ensure operational readiness. With reduced congestion, safer road conditions, and modern infrastructure, the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is set to become a key model for sustainable, high-speed road transport in Uttar Pradesh. Regional planners anticipate significant improvements in logistics, commuting efficiency, and regional economic growth once the corridor is operational.
