Lucknow — In a landmark expansion of India’s digital governance landscape, a new AI GovTech Innovation Centre has been inaugurated in Lucknow, bringing advanced artificial intelligence development and public sector problem-solving capabilities to the heart of Uttar Pradesh.
The facility — launched on February 22 — positions the city as an emerging node for AI-enabled public service design, signalling a shift in how regional governments harness technology to improve productivity, transparency and citizen-centred services. Set up by IBM, the centre will serve as a collaborative platform where AI applications can be prototyped, validated and scaled for state and national governance contexts. Alongside a Software Lab and an IBM Consulting FutureNow facility, the hub will contribute to global development portfolios while addressing local public service challenges — a model that bridges multinational expertise with India’s governance ambitions. Officials say the centre is designed to focus on Generative AI and Agentic AI technologies, building solutions that integrate large and small language models for use in government systems, enterprise operations and citizen services. By embedding global best practices in software engineering, automation, cybersecurity and sustainability, the facility aims to support the creation of AI tools that can tackle real-world issues such as administrative efficiency, disaster response and urban service delivery.
