Lucknow Faces Power Outage Protests

Lucknow: Amid soaring temperatures, widespread power outages across Lucknow led to significant disruptions and public unrest on Tuesday.

Residents in various localities endured prolonged power cuts, prompting numerous protests against power authorities. In Basmandi, located in the Hussainganj area, residents faced continuous power cuts starting at 6 pm. Frustrated by the lack of electricity, locals staged a protest against power officials, blocking streets and causing traffic congestion. The protest persisted until the power supply was finally restored around 11 pm.

Similar unrest was reported at Balaganj crossing, where residents began protesting around 9 pm due to a power outage. Another significant protest occurred outside the Rajajipuram old powerhouse at 1 am, driven by power supply disruptions attributed to overloading. The situation escalated as angry residents vandalised the powerhouse, damaging the air conditioner and computer inside. The crowd dispersed only after police intervention.

In a notable instance of quick response, a team from the Lucknow Electricity Supply Administration (LESA) managed to replace a damaged 400 kV transformer in Jiamau within two hours, restoring electricity to the area.

Throughout the day, power tripping incidents were reported in various localities, including Eldeco-2, Telibagh, Mahanagar, Vikasnagar, Aishbagh, and Gudamba. These frequent disruptions added to the residents’ frustration amid the intense heat. The power outages also affected the city’s metro services. Around 3 pm, operations were briefly halted due to a disruption in power supply. The affected sections were between Vishwavidyalaya and KD Singh Babu Stadium metro stations, with a metro train halted for approximately three minutes on the Gomti bridge.

These incidents underscore the critical challenges faced by the city’s power infrastructure, particularly during peak summer months. The recurring power cuts have not only caused inconvenience but also raised concerns about the management and reliability of the power supply system in Lucknow.

Addressing the underlying issues and ensuring a stable power supply will be essential to mitigate public discontent and maintain essential services. The city’s authorities will need to prioritise infrastructure improvements and effective management strategies to prevent such widespread disruptions in the future.
