Lucknow CG City to get Urban Park

Lucknow Development Authority has cleared the development of a 20-acre Urban Park in CG City, positioning the project as a new public green landmark in the fast-expanding southern corridor of the state capital. Planned near the cancer hospital precinct, the park is expected to combine recreation, ecological design and community infrastructure in a zone increasingly defined by large-scale real estate growth.

Estimated at an investment of approximately ₹28 crore, the Urban Park will be structured around a five-senses concept, integrating visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory and interactive elements across landscaped zones. Officials overseeing the project say the design seeks to create a sensory-rich public space rather than a conventional ornamental garden. One of the key attractions will be the city’s first green roof library, designed with vegetation layered over the rooftop to moderate heat gain and improve thermal performance. Urban planners note that such structures contribute to passive cooling and reduce surface temperatures — a critical feature in North Indian cities facing intensifying summer heatwaves.

The master plan includes a 600-metre jogging track, open-air gym facilities, children’s play areas and a dedicated sports arena featuring courts for badminton, basketball, tennis and box cricket. The sports zone has been located along the periphery to allow controlled public access without disrupting internal park circulation. An amphitheatre with a seating capacity of around 300 and a modest food court are also part of the design.A one-acre water body is proposed within the park, accompanied by themed horticultural zones including a fragrance garden. Landscape architects involved in similar civic projects argue that water features, if sustainably managed, can enhance microclimate conditions and support biodiversity within dense urban neighbourhoods.

The Urban Park forms part of a broader infrastructure push in CG City. A multi-level parking structure is under construction behind the Ekana Cricket Stadium, designed to accommodate over 500 vehicles. The facility includes double basements and a landscaped roof, reflecting a shift towards integrating greenery into transport infrastructure.Simultaneously, authorities have initiated work on a 1.5-kilometre drainage channel at a reported cost of ₹38 crore to strengthen stormwater management in the area. Officials have directed that the drain be covered in sensitive stretches to enhance safety and urban aesthetics, especially near wetlands and sports facilities.

Urban economists observe that large-format parks often act as catalysts for surrounding property values while improving liveability indices. However, they caution that equitable access and maintenance planning will determine long-term success. If executed as proposed, the Urban Park could anchor CG City as a mixed-use urban district that blends recreation, environmental resilience and real estate expansion — a template increasingly relevant as Lucknow scales its next phase of growth.
