Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Transportation Infrastructure has secured a major contract from the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA) project, marking a significant step in Maharashtra’s urban development.
The contract, awarded by the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited (CIDCO), involves the integrated infrastructure development for Town Planning Schemes 2 through 7, a critical component in the region’s expansion. This extensive project will see the construction of four approach roads, each extending 13.28 kilometres, and featuring nine major structures. Among these are three steel bridges that will span the Kalundre River and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, underscoring the project’s strategic importance in enhancing connectivity within this rapidly developing area.
Additionally, the project includes twelve minor bridges, twenty-seven underpasses, and various approach structures. The development of related utilities and electrical works is also integrated into this comprehensive plan. The NAINA project is a cornerstone in the Maharashtra government’s broader vision for creating what has been dubbed the “Third Mumbai.” This ambitious initiative aims to develop a mega township strategically located near the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL) and in proximity to the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). Once completed, this township is expected to serve as a significant urban hub, further easing the congestion in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
The New Town Development Authority (NTDA), with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) acting as the primary agency, will oversee the development of this new township. The project will span 323.44 square kilometres and include 124 villages, drawn from various regional plans: 80 villages from NAINA, 33 from Khopta New Town Notified Area (KNTNA), two from the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Plan (MMRP), and nine from the Raigad Regional Plan (RRP).
This project is part of a larger effort by the Maharashtra government to decentralise Mumbai’s urban sprawl, providing a sustainable and well-planned alternative that addresses the region’s growing infrastructure needs. The development of NAINA and the Third Mumbai is expected to play a pivotal role in accommodating the region’s future population growth, while also contributing to the economic and social development of the broader metropolitan area.
The contract awarded to L&T is a testament to the company’s expertise in executing large-scale infrastructure projects. By leveraging advanced engineering solutions, L&T is poised to contribute significantly to the transformation of Navi Mumbai into a world-class urban centre. The successful completion of this project will not only enhance L&T’s standing in the infrastructure sector but will also serve as a key milestone in Maharashtra’s ongoing urban development initiatives.
