Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has set the stage for a significant overhaul of the city’s infrastructure.
In a high-level review meeting held at Mantralaya, the Chief Minister unveiled plans to develop key transport systems and modern road networks to ensure a smooth and sustainable experience for the millions expected to attend the religious event. One of the most pivotal aspects of Fadnavis’s vision is the introduction of an integrated e-bus service. This initiative is expected to offer pilgrims a convenient, eco-friendly, and efficient mode of transportation during the event, reducing the carbon footprint associated with traditional fuel-based transport. The e-bus plan is being prioritised as part of a broader strategy to manage the expected surge of visitors from across the country, particularly from major urban centres such as Mumbai, Pune, Shirdi, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
Alongside the e-bus system, the CM has called for a rapid finalisation of proposals for an outer ring road around Nashik to ease congestion and improve traffic flow. Acknowledging the growing concerns over traffic jams and delayed travel times during large events, Fadnavis has urged officials to fast-track the approval process for the new peripheral road projects. These roads will link vital access points such as the Samruddhi Mahamarg, airport connector routes, and the planned 137-km greenfield ring road network. Some sections of this ambitious road network will be developed by the Public Works Department (PWD), while the rest will be managed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The importance of this ring road project cannot be overstated, as it will serve to connect different parts of Nashik, particularly for those travelling to the Kumbh Mela. The construction of this network will necessitate the acquisition of approximately 500 hectares of land from around 40 villages. However, this challenge is being viewed as a necessary step to unlock the potential for sustainable urban growth while alleviating the strain on existing roadways.
Moreover, the focus on modern traffic planning and the use of cutting-edge technology to manage vehicular flow underscores the state’s commitment to creating a more sustainable urban environment. These enhancements will not only serve the Kumbh Mela but are also intended to ensure long-term benefits for the city’s residents and visitors. Fadnavis has also directed the inclusion of Nashik’s transport projects under the Urban Challenge Fund, an initiative by the central government that aims to support innovative urban infrastructure projects. This is expected to further expedite the implementation of Nashik’s proposed green infrastructure and transportation systems, aligning with the state’s broader commitment to zero-carbon emissions.
As part of the plan, vehicle parking and road planning will also receive significant attention to ensure that pilgrims can navigate the city without unnecessary delays or inconveniences. By focusing on these aspects, the state aims to not only facilitate the smooth movement of millions during the Kumbh Mela but also lay the foundation for a more connected, sustainable, and inclusive urban environment for Nashik’s future. This holistic approach to urban development, combining modern transport solutions with eco-friendly initiatives, reflects Maharashtra’s broader vision of creating sustainable, gender-neutral, and equitable cities.
