The UK’s logistics infrastructure, DP World has announced a £1 billion expansion of its London Gateway facility.
This development aims to enhance the port’s capacity and efficiency, positioning it as a pivotal hub in the nation’s supply chain network.
The expansion includes the construction of two new shipping berths, increasing the total to six. These berths are designed to accommodate the world’s largest container ships, each over 400 meters in length. Additionally, a new rail terminal will be established to support the anticipated rise in containerized trade. The expanded quayside, stretching over 2.5 kilometers, will feature Europe’s tallest quay cranes, enhancing the port’s operational capabilities.
The project is expected to create 400 permanent jobs, supplementing the existing workforce of 1,200. This investment underscores DP World’s commitment to the UK’s economic growth and resilience. Moreover, the expansion aligns with the nation’s decarbonization goals by promoting a shift from road to rail transport, thereby reducing carbon emissions and alleviating road congestion.
The introduction of new rail services from London Gateway is set to improve access to inland terminals, facilitating more efficient distribution across the country. These services offer a practical, greener alternative for the wider supply chain, supporting the UK’s transition to more sustainable logistics practices.
Julie Garn, Intermodal Director at GB Railfreight, emphasized the importance of rail freight in lowering emissions and driving economic growth. “Freight by rail plays a vital role in lowering emissions and driving our economy,” she stated. “These services offer a practical, greener alternative for the wider supply chain.”
John Bailey, Managing Director – Intermodal at Maritime, highlighted that London Gateway’s growth, fueled by the Gemini Cooperation’s Asia–Europe trade, required stronger inland links. “The expanded rail network meets increasing demand and supports more efficient national distribution,” he noted.
DP World’s £1 billion investment in London Gateway’s rail infrastructure represents a significant step towards enhancing the UK’s logistics capabilities. By improving capacity and promoting sustainable transport solutions, this expansion is poised to strengthen the nation’s supply chain resilience and support its environmental objectives.
