Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is intensifying its efforts against littering in the city, with plans to impose significant spot fines ranging from ₹580 to ₹1,080 for offenders. This initiative, spearheaded by the KMC’s solid waste management department, aims to tackle the growing issue of waste disposal and cleanliness in Kolkata. Over the past few months, the KMC has lodged numerous complaints against individuals and traders for littering, signalling a shift towards stricter enforcement of civic rules.
As part of the anti-littering drive, KMC inspectors will be empowered to collect fines based on the severity of the offence. The initial fine for first-time offenders will be ₹580, while repeat offenders may face an increased penalty of ₹1,080. The KMC is also considering the option to take habitual offenders to the magistrate’s court. The strategy includes a move towards a more modern payment system, potentially allowing online transactions for the spot fines, which could simplify the process for both authorities and violators.
The most affected boroughs include III, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, XIII, and XV, which have been identified as hotspots for littering. The increased complaints and fines reflect the growing frustration among residents and the civic body regarding the lack of cleanliness in these areas. KMC officials are urging citizens to take personal responsibility for their surroundings, emphasising that a cleaner Kolkata is a collective effort requiring participation from all residents. From a sustainability perspective, this initiative highlights the pressing need to address waste management issues in urban areas.
