LG India Expands Manufacturing After Record AC Sales

India’s consumer durables sector is experiencing an early summer demand surge, and one major electronics manufacturer has already crossed a key milestone in the cooling appliances market. The company reported selling more than one million air conditioners in the January–March quarter of 2026, marking its fastest start to the summer season in India to date. The milestone reflects strong seasonal demand for cooling appliances as rising temperatures across the country push households to upgrade or purchase new air-conditioning units earlier in the year. Industry analysts say India’s air-conditioner market has been expanding steadily as urbanisation, rising incomes and improving electricity access increase appliance penetration in residential homes.

The record quarterly sales also highlight the growing consumer shift toward energy-efficient cooling technologies. Manufacturers have been expanding their product portfolios with inverter-based systems and models that meet the latest Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) standards, which are designed to reduce power consumption while maintaining cooling performance. To support rising demand, the company plans to expand its manufacturing capacity in India by scaling up production at a new facility under development in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. The plant will strengthen the firm’s domestic production network and allow it to respond more quickly to seasonal demand spikes in the cooling appliance market. The expansion forms part of a broader localisation strategy aimed at deepening manufacturing operations within India. The company already operates major production facilities in Noida and Pune, and the addition of the Sri City plant is expected to reinforce India’s role as both a domestic manufacturing base and an export hub for appliances. India-manufactured air conditioners are increasingly being exported to neighbouring and regional markets including Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and parts of Southeast Asia, reflecting the country’s growing importance within global electronics supply chains. Market experts say the record sales also reflect broader changes in consumer behaviour. Air conditioners, once considered a luxury purchase in many Indian households, are gradually becoming mainstream appliances as temperatures rise and urban housing patterns change. Smaller apartment sizes and higher population densities in cities have increased demand for efficient indoor cooling solutions. Manufacturers are responding to this shift by offering a wider range of products—from compact 0.8-ton units designed for small homes to larger 2-ton models aimed at bigger residential spaces. This diversified portfolio allows companies to target both first-time buyers and consumers upgrading to premium or energy-efficient systems. 

Industry analysts expect demand to remain strong throughout the summer months. In addition to rising temperatures, financing schemes, e-commerce discounts and tax adjustments on cooling appliances are expected to further support consumer purchases. The early-season sales surge signals how climate patterns and evolving consumer lifestyles are reshaping India’s consumer electronics market. As cooling appliances become essential household infrastructure rather than discretionary purchases, manufacturers are investing more aggressively in domestic production capacity and technology upgrades to capture the growing demand.
