Lucknow authorities have taken a firm stance against unauthorised urban expansion, as the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) announced it will not approve building maps in 241 illegal colonies across the city. The decision aligns with the city’s Master Plan, emphasising structured growth over unregulated development, even as mapping norms are being relaxed in other areas.
According to officials, only roads that are at least 7.5 metres wide, constructed by government agencies, and extending for a minimum of 200 metres will qualify for map approvals. Private roads, regardless of their width, located within unauthorised colonies, remain ineligible. The LDA’s recent board meeting confirmed that this approach is intended to preserve policy clarity and prevent chaotic urban sprawl. Many of the affected colonies have existed for over two decades but continue to lack essential civic amenities such as paved roads, proper drainage, parks, or community spaces. Authorities highlight that approving building plans in these areas without adequate infrastructure would compromise residents’ quality of life and set a precedent for unsustainable growth.
The decision comes amid other relaxed regulations, where single-house plans on government roads narrower than nine metres can now receive approval. However, officials emphasise that such exceptions do not extend to illegal colonies, signalling the LDA’s effort to balance developmental flexibility with regulatory discipline. Experts note that unregulated urban growth often burdens municipal systems and undermines city planning. “Authorised expansion must align with infrastructure availability, public health standards, and sustainable planning principles,” said a senior city planning official. “Loosening approvals without these safeguards would adversely affect long-term livability and equity in urban spaces.”
By enforcing strict adherence to Master Plan stipulations, the LDA is signalling a shift towards sustainable, inclusive, and orderly urban development. Residents of illegal colonies may face immediate challenges, but officials maintain that compliance with established planning guidelines will ultimately deliver equitable services and safer living conditions. Urban planners and policy analysts suggest that authorities could complement this approach by incentivising regularisation only where infrastructure improvements are feasible, thereby promoting eco-friendly and zero-carbon development. The LDA’s strategy underlines a broader vision for Lucknow as a city balancing expansion with environmental sustainability, civic order, and long-term social equity.
As the debate continues, the city faces the challenge of managing decades of informal growth while steering new developments toward sustainable, gender-neutral, and inclusive urbanisation. The LDA has made it clear that until roads and public amenities meet minimum standards, building approvals in these 241 colonies will remain firmly withheld, demonstrating a commitment to systematic urban governance.
