LBSI Airport Expansion Features First Highway Underpass Under Runway in India
The expansion of Lal Bahadur Shastri International (LBSI) Airport in Varanasi is a monumental project that will redefine the airport’s role in India’s aviation landscape. The Rs 2,870 crore infrastructure development, which has already begun, is designed to increase the airport’s capacity, enhance passenger services, and support the region’s growth.
One of the most unique features of this ambitious expansion is the creation of an underpass beneath the expanded runway to accommodate the Varanasi-Lucknow highway, making it the first of its kind in India. This project is expected to significantly improve road connectivity while facilitating smoother transportation in and out of the airport area. A recent meeting with Airport Authority of India (AAI) project officials and various stakeholders discussed the master plan for the expansion. Among the key features, the establishment of a dedicated cargo area for agricultural products was highlighted, which will directly benefit local farmers by facilitating exports. Additionally, plans to relocate the aviation fuel station and integrate a piped natural gas (PNG) line for the food court were finalized. These elements are critical to enhancing the airport’s overall infrastructure and operational efficiency.
The LBSI Airport’s expansion will significantly increase its capacity. The runway will be extended from 2,745 meters to 4,075 meters, and apron bays will grow from 11 to 20. The terminal area will expand from 24,500 square meters to 99,500 square meters, allowing the airport to handle 6,050 passengers per hour, up from the current 1,050. Passenger services will be further enhanced with an increase in check-in counters from 21 to 93, baggage claim belts from 2 to 9, and aerobridges from 4 to 12. Parking capacity will also be upgraded, with the addition of 1,000 surface-level parking spots and a 1,000-slot multi-level parking facility. The terminal design will blend modernity with cultural heritage, inspired by the trident of Lord Shiva and the architectural style of Rajasthan’s palaces.
Sustainability is also a key focus of the expansion. The terminal will feature a GRIHA 5-star rating, reflecting a commitment to green building practices. Furthermore, the entire airport’s energy needs will be met through renewable sources, setting a benchmark for eco-friendly development in India’s aviation sector. The innovative underpass beneath the runway will also help decongest the area by allowing uninterrupted road traffic while avoiding disruptions to airport operations. This infrastructure approach is expected to set a precedent for future airport designs in India. The scale and ambition of the project are reflected in the Rs 2,870 crore investment, funded jointly by the central government, state government, and private stakeholders. The expansion is expected to be completed by 2027, with long-term benefits that include increased passenger capacity, improved infrastructure, and enhanced cargo handling facilities. These improvements will not only better connect Varanasi to other parts of the country and the world but also support the region’s economic growth and job creation.
The expansion is seen as a catalyst for Varanasi’s development, transforming the city into a major transportation hub. The integration of agricultural exports, modern passenger facilities, and sustainable infrastructure aligns with the government’s broader goal of improving regional connectivity and boosting economic growth. Airport director Puneet Gupta expressed confidence in the project’s success, noting that it would significantly impact air connectivity and create economic opportunities for local residents. Public opinion has largely been positive, with the community recognizing the potential benefits of improved accessibility and job creation. However, there are concerns about the scale of investment and the timeline for completion, but overall, the expansion is viewed as a critical step toward modernizing the airport and positioning Varanasi as a key aviation hub.
