Kurnool-Vijayawada Flight Launched, Boost to Andhra’s Air Connectivity
Kurnool marked a new chapter in its regional connectivity as flight services to Vijayawada officially commenced from Orvakal Airport. The intra-state service, initially scheduled for three days a week, aims to improve travel efficiency and logistics within Andhra Pradesh. Authorities confirmed ongoing plans to expand the service to daily operations and enhance airport infrastructure, reflecting the state’s broader ambition to establish itself as a major aviation and logistics hub.
The inauguration of Kurnool–Vijayawada flights is a milestone in Andhra Pradesh’s ongoing push to decentralise air travel and reduce travel time across the state’s major urban centres. Currently operating three times a week, the route is expected to serve a mix of business travellers, tourists, and administrative personnel. Senior aviation authorities indicated that night landing facilities are being considered to support extended operations at Orvakal Airport. This route adds critical intra-state capacity at a time when air passenger numbers are steadily rising. According to aviation insiders, Andhra Pradesh’s tier-2 airports, including those in Rajahmundry, Tirupati, and Kadapa, have collectively recorded double-digit growth in traffic. By strengthening regional flight operations, the government aims to alleviate road travel burden and promote balanced regional development. The Vijayawada connection is especially significant given its position as a gateway to coastal and capital-bound destinations, aligning with the broader strategy to enhance intercity air routes.
Looking ahead, authorities are prioritising the development of new airports in Nellore, Anantapur, and Kuppam, in addition to the upcoming Bhogapuram greenfield airport. These initiatives signal a larger shift in Andhra Pradesh’s civil aviation vision—from airport expansion to full-scale regional integration. Aviation experts note that connecting underserved locations like Kurnool to the state’s flight grid can reduce economic imbalances and spur local business growth. The integration of small airports into the mainstream network could also foster tourism, especially in districts with rich cultural and heritage significance. In parallel, there is an emphasis on enabling cargo logistics, which could benefit from improved runway operations and warehousing infrastructure at newer airports. Authorities stress that reducing regional travel time through air connectivity plays a crucial role in making Andhra Pradesh a viable logistics and business corridor. With plans to make the Vijayawada–Kurnool link a daily service, this route could serve as a model for future regional air expansion.
