Konkan Railway Plans New Car Ro-Ro Facilities At Three Coastal Stations

Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL) is set to broaden its car Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) service along the Mumbai–Konkan route by introducing dedicated ramps and associated infrastructure at Sawantwadi Road, Ratnagiri, and Sangameshwar stations. The expansion aims to make the car ferry service a regular feature, offering motorists a convenient and time-efficient alternative to the heavily congested Mumbai–Goa highway, particularly during peak festival periods such as Ganeshotsav and Diwali.

First introduced this year during the Ganesh festival, the car Ro-Ro service allows passengers to transport their vehicles by train, reducing travel stress and journey times along the Western Ghats. Initial runs between Kolad and Verna ferried seven cars, and following positive passenger feedback, the route was extended to include Nandgaon Road station. KRCL officials have reported steady demand, reflecting growing public interest in eco-friendly and safe road alternatives. KRCL officials highlighted that following site inspections, Sawantwadi Road, Ratnagiri, and Sangameshwar were identified as suitable locations for ramp construction and other facilities to expand the network. This initiative complements broader efforts to integrate sustainable transport solutions into regional connectivity, reducing fuel consumption, road congestion, and vehicular emissions.

In parallel with the Ro-Ro expansion, KRCL has proposed a Rs 7,776 crore infrastructure upgrade to the Railway Ministry. This comprehensive plan includes track replacement, overhead equipment modernisation, and the renewal of ageing assets, expected to enhance safety, operational efficiency, and overall service quality. Officials expect approval by March 2026. KRCL has also demonstrated strong fiscal management. Out of its total debt, Rs 1,150 crore has already been repaid, with the remaining Rs 600 crore expected to be cleared by the end of FY 2024–25 or early FY 2025–26, positioning Konkan Railway to become fully debt-free. This financial stability enables the corporation to focus on strategic investments such as infrastructure modernisation and service expansions.

The corporation reported operating a record 381 Ganpati special trains this year, generating revenue of Rs 45 crore. These initiatives underscore KRCL’s commitment to sustainable and customer-centric transport solutions, while simultaneously fostering economic activity along the Konkan coast. As the Ro-Ro service expands, it is anticipated to alleviate road traffic, reduce travel-related stress for motorists, and promote a greener mode of transport. With improved infrastructure, KRCL aims to make vehicle ferrying a mainstream transport option, aligning with broader sustainable mobility objectives in the region.
