The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) has announced the implementation of its monsoon timetable, effective from June 15 to October 20, 2025. This seasonal schedule introduces adjusted train timings and operational protocols to ensure passenger safety during the challenging monsoon season.
During the monsoon period, train services on the Konkan Railway route will operate under a modified timetable. This includes reduced sectional speeds to accommodate weather conditions and enhance safety. Loco pilots have been instructed to limit train speeds to 40 km/h during periods of heavy rainfall and low visibility. Passengers are advised to check updated train schedules on the official Indian Railways website or by calling the All India Railway Helpline No. 139. KRCL has implemented a comprehensive set of safety measures to mitigate risks associated with the monsoon season. A dedicated force of 636 trained personnel has been deployed for round-the-clock patrolling across vulnerable locations on the Konkan Railway route as part of an intensified monsoon preparedness strategy.
To enable rapid emergency response, BRN (wagon)-mounted excavators have been strategically positioned at key stations including Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavali, and Verna. Additionally, Rail Maintenance Vehicles (RMVs) are stationed at nine critical junctions—Veer, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Rajapur Road, Kudal, Verna, Karwar, Bhatkal, and Udupi—ensuring readiness across the line. Tower Wagons have also been placed on standby at Mangaon, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavali, Karmali, Karwar, and Udupi for immediate mobilisation in case of track blockages or infrastructure damage. Operational adjustments are also being enforced rigorously to account for the region’s heavy rainfall. Loco pilots have been directed to reduce train speeds to 40 km/h during poor visibility caused by downpours. To bolster emergency response, Self-Propelled Accident Relief Medical Vans (ARMVs) equipped with mini-operation theatres and advanced medical aid facilities have been deployed at Ratnagiri and Verna.
Furthermore, an Accident Relief Train (ART) stationed at Verna is on alert, ready to mobilise within 15 minutes. In circumstances where waterlogging exceeds 100mm on the tracks, train services will be suspended temporarily and only resumed once water levels return to safe limits, ensuring passenger safety remains uncompromised. The communication backbone of the railway system has also been fortified. Field safety personnel have been issued mobile phones to maintain direct contact with the control offices and nearby stations in real time. Loco pilots and guards are equipped with walkie-talkies, while all operational stations now feature 25-Watt VHF sets for seamless wireless coordination between onboard crews and station masters. Emergency Communication (EMC) sockets have been installed at one-kilometre intervals along the tracks to ensure immediate connectivity between patrolmen, watchmen, train crews, and maintenance teams in crisis situations. Additionally, ARMVs are equipped with satellite phones to enhance communication capabilities during disaster scenarios.
Konkan Railway has also invested in state-of-the-art monitoring systems to proactively track weather-related risks. LED signals have been installed across the route to improve visibility during fog and low-light conditions. Self-recording rain gauges are operational at nine stations—Mangaon, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Vilwade, Kankavali, Madgaon, Karwar, Bhatkal, and Udupi—to monitor rainfall levels and provide early warnings. Flood alert systems have been installed at critical bridges spanning the Kali River (between Mangaon and Veer), Savitri River (between Veer and Sape Wamane), and Vashishti River (between Chiplun and Kamathe) to notify authorities of rising water levels. Anemometers have been deployed on major viaducts and bridges such as the Panval Viaduct (between Ratnagiri and Nivasar), Mandovi Bridge (between Thivim and Karmali), Zuari Bridge (between Karmali and Verna), and Sharavati Bridge (between Honnavar and Manki) to continuously monitor wind velocity and issue alerts when wind speeds reach dangerous thresholds.
To support the extensive network and maintain operational continuity, 24×7 control rooms are functioning at Belapur, Ratnagiri, and Madgaon throughout the monsoon period. Trained medical teams have been stationed at Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Verna, Madgaon, Karwar, and Udupi to handle emergencies with rapid medical intervention, ensuring both proactive and reactive systems are fully in place to tackle the seasonal challenges. Passengers are strongly advised to stay informed about their travel plans by checking train statuses online or by contacting the helpline at 139. It is also recommended to adhere to safety guidelines and be prepared for potential delays or service suspensions due to adverse weather conditions. Konkan Railway’s proactive approach underscores its commitment to ensuring the safety and comfort of its passengers during the monsoon season.
