Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) has announced its monsoon timetable effective from June 15 to October 20, 2025, implementing a comprehensive set of safety measures to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers.
The monsoon timetable has been introduced to accommodate weather-related challenges, with adjusted sectional speeds and operational protocols. Loco pilots have been instructed to reduce train speeds to 40 km/h during periods of heavy rainfall and low visibility. In cases where water levels on tracks exceed 100 mm, train services will be temporarily suspended until conditions improve. KRCL has taken proactive steps to enhance safety during the monsoon season. Over 636 trained personnel will conduct round-the-clock patrolling at vulnerable locations. BRN-mounted excavators and Rail Maintenance Vehicles (RMVs) have been strategically placed at nine key locations—Veer, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Rajapur Road, Kudal, Verna, Karwar, Bhatkal, and Udupi—to ensure rapid response during emergencies. Tower wagons are stationed at Mangaon, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavali, Karmali, Karwar, and Udupi for immediate action.
In addition to physical infrastructure, KRCL has bolstered its communication systems. Emergency Communication (EMC) sockets are installed every 1 km along the route, enabling immediate contact between patrolmen, watchmen, loco pilots, guards, and other field maintenance staff with control offices during emergencies. Safety personnel are equipped with mobile phones for emergency communication with the control office/station. Loco pilots and guards are provided with walkie-talkies, and all stations have 25-Watt VHF sets ensuring seamless wireless coordination between train crews and station masters. Satellite phones in Accident Relief Medical Vans (ARMVs) enhance communication capabilities during disaster response.
KRCL has implemented several technological upgrades to monitor weather conditions and ensure safety. Self-recording rain gauges are active at nine stations—Mangaon, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Vilwade, Kankavali, Madgaon, Karwar, Bhatkal, and Udupi—to monitor and alert officials about rainfall levels. Flood warning systems are functional at key bridges, including the Kali River (between Mangaon and Veer), Savitri River (between Veer and Sape Wamane), and Vashishti River (between Chiplun and Kamathe), to alert officials if water levels reach dangerous levels. Anemometers are installed on major viaducts and bridges, such as the Panval Viaduct (between Ratnagiri & Nivasar), Mandovi Bridge (between Thivim & Karmali), Zuari Bridge (Karmali and Verna), and Sharavati Bridge (between Honnavar and Manki), to monitor wind speeds.
KRCL has established 24/7 control rooms in Belapur, Ratnagiri, and Madgaon to monitor operations throughout the monsoon season. Medical teams are positioned at Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Verna, Madgaon, Karwar, and Udupi to handle any emergencies. In line with its commitment to sustainability, KRCL has undertaken extensive cleaning of catchwater drains and inspection of cuttings across the route. Ongoing and completed geo-safety projects have drastically reduced instances of boulder falls and soil slippages, contributing to safer and more reliable train services.
Passengers are advised to check train status online during the monsoon season by visiting www.konkanrailway.com or by dialing 139. KRCL closely coordinates with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for daily weather updates to make informed decisions regarding train operations. With these comprehensive measures in place, Konkan Railway aims to provide a safe and reliable travel experience for passengers during the challenging monsoon season.
