Kolkata’s New INR 727 Crore Flyover to Ease Metro Congestion

The Finance department has sanctioned INR 727 crore for the construction of a new four-lane flyover by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). Spanning a length of 7 kilometres, the upcoming flyover will commence from Metropolitan Crossing on EM Bypass, traverse through Chingrighata, and connect to Salt Lake Bypass. This strategic route will parallel the Metro alignment, facilitating smoother connectivity between key areas including Sector V and New Town.

The project, envisioned to ease traffic congestion and enhance urban mobility, will incorporate entry and exit ramps at crucial junctions such as Sector V and Karunamoyee. These ramps are strategically positioned to optimize traffic flow, particularly in conjunction with the East-West Metro project linking Sector V to Sealdah. KMDA is set to initiate the tendering process imminently, marking the next phase in realising this ambitious infrastructure upgrade. Concurrently, to minimize disruption during construction, the existing Chingrighata flyover will remain operational until the new flyover is completed, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for commuters.

The decision to greenlight the INR 727 crore KMDA flyover underscores Kolkata’s commitment to modernizing its transport network and addressing growing urbanization challenges. By integrating advanced urban planning principles, the project aims not only to enhance commuter convenience but also to stimulate economic growth and development in surrounding areas. With Kolkata poised for continued expansion and development, investments in critical infrastructure like the KMDA flyover exemplify proactive governance and forward-looking urban planning strategies. As the city prepares to embark on this transformative project, stakeholders anticipate substantial improvements in traffic management and overall urban livability, reinforcing Kolkata’s position as a dynamic metropolis on the global stage.
