Kolkata’s iconic Howrah Bridge is set to receive a significant upgrade with a new solar-powered lighting project aimed at enhancing its visual appeal and promoting sustainable urban development. The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK), in collaboration with Coal India Limited (CIL), has initiated plans to transform the 82-year-old bridge into a dazzling spectacle that showcases both its architectural brilliance and the city’s commitment to eco-friendly infrastructure.
The project, which is expected to be completed within six to eight months from the awarding of the contract, will introduce dynamic illumination to the bridge. This includes the installation of energy-efficient LED lighting systems that will highlight the bridge’s structural features and create a vibrant nighttime experience for both locals and tourists. The use of solar-powered lighting aligns with the city’s goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy sources. In addition to the enhanced lighting, the project will feature a seven-minute light-and-sound show that can be accessed remotely through a dedicated mobile application. This innovative approach allows people from around the world to experience the bridge’s transformation from the comfort of their homes.
The show will be synchronized with a specially composed musical score, adding an auditory dimension to the visual display and making the experience more immersive. The Howrah Bridge, also known as Rabindra Setu, is a vital link between Kolkata and Howrah, carrying over 100,000 vehicles and more than 150,000 pedestrians daily. Its transformation into a dynamic light-and-sound attraction is expected to boost tourism and enhance the city’s cultural landscape. The project not only preserves the bridge’s heritage but also modernizes it to meet the expectations of contemporary audiences. The SMPK has emphasized the importance of community involvement in the project, inviting designers, architects, and students to participate in competitions aimed at enhancing the visual appeal of the bridge and its surroundings.
